  1. Marquis @ 1/$4-5M >> Suppan @ 3/$30M or 4/$40M
  2. maybe... depends on how Hirsh turns out. I guess I value a league-average pitcher who has made all his starts for five years in a row.
  3. Wasn't his ERA+ just 95 in 2004? according to baseball reference it was 100/99/100/127/103 in the past five years
  4. who cares about how many games he won? He's a good pitcher, better than Lilly and better than Meche. You don't determine who makes the playoffs by ERA, k/9, bb/9, and WHIP. It matters when you give up runs. When you strike out guys. When you walk guys. All those stats have a serious problem. They're all averages. You lose a lot of statistical insight using them. my brain just exploded
  5. who cares about how many games he won? He's a good pitcher, better than Lilly and better than Meche. Definitely better than Meche, Lilly is debatable. OK, so it's debateable that he's better than a pitcher the Cubs just gave $10M (even though he's undoubtedly more consistent and a smaller health risk than Lilly). So again, why would he not be a good addition?

  7. Crap. Garland and Oswalt. Carlos Lee. Crap. Garland could get lit up in that park. Garland IS going to get lit up in that park. Jon Garland is the quintessential product of what goes right with great run support. He's not the stud pitcher a lot of people think he is. He's not awful either, but he's not THAT good i didn't know run support affected ERA+ or WHIP.
  8. Foxsports.com: Hendry won't be released from hospital until Friday. who cares? if they're willing to trade Garland and they don't really understand his value, then make an offer from the hospital. Garland's not great, but he is solid and will eat up a lot of innings.
  9. I think they'd be pretty wise to deal Garland in this market. They would, but first they'd be wise to actually get something worthwhile in return. Seriously, you've got inferior pitchers like Lilly and Meche getting $10-11M per year contracts on the open market - Garland should fetch a lot. The rumored deal in this thread is an atrocious deal in ANY market, and especially this one.
  10. Can't believe the White Sox were about to trade a guy with 200+ innings and an above-average ERA+ the last three years, for considerably worse starter and a fast outfielder who has no pop and can't get on base enough.
  11. I agree. Not that getting paid $45 million is a bad way to spend four years, but if you're a competitor, why on earth would you go where playoff hopes go to die? Well, he's from Louisiana... maybe he's just more of a small-town guy who prefers being away from the high-profile, major-market teams. Who knows. I don't begrudge athletes for taking the highest offer - most of us would probably do that too.
  12. Apparently about 90% of major league players are greedy pricks then. You enjoy your below-average $11M per year pitcher, Royals. Good luck with that.
  13. In 2002 dollars, it's estimated that Ted Williams made just under $11 million in his career. And he's the second best hitter in history.
  14. They looked awful. I don't know how they beat us by 15 at their place. They are awful, and I don't know how they did that either. I just hope they lose and get a lottery pick. And fire Billy King too. The Sixers definitely need to trade Webber. He's a shell of his former self. The worst thing I saw for Philly was their interior defense. Wow, there can not be a worse interior D in the NBA. They're bad outside too. Kyle Korver tries hard, but he's just so bad on defense. It's unfortunate, because he's one of the few guys on that team who can shoot from outside. Webber is untradeable, probably... he's earning about 10% of his $20M salary and probably will do the same next year. I really hope they trade Iverson. Not because I don't like him, but because I DO like him, and I want to see him on a team that could give a run at going deep into the playoffs. The Sixers are going nowhere, with or without him. They could probably get a couple of good young players or a high draft pick for him at the trade deadline, too.

  16. hope you guys enjoyed beating up on the hapless sixers
  17. Yeah it's not like going into 2004, when we had 4 very good, healthy, young starting pitchers, a solid lineup and a good closer. We could be certain of success that year. we were as certain of success as anybody's been in a while. the fact that it didn't happen to work out is irrelevant. if you could have that situation again, you'd be a fool to turn it down. my point was that it's the cubs, the only thing you can be certain of is that there won't be success

  19. I'm picturing the manager from Major League when he was in the hospital trying to hide from nurses that he wasn't ignoring baseball. He's probably got the phone hidden under the blanket with an earpiece attached, and when he's talking and a nurse walks by, he starts singing in an effort to pretend he's listening to his ipod. Call me crazy, but I don't think he was listening to an Ipod
  20. well, it's better than last year. At least this year we can see things coming together where a lot of the "ifs" are positive. Last year there weren't any "ifs" because the team sucked on paper and on the field.
  21. Great move, if you're looking to improve the Cubs' basketball team.
  22. He keeps players like Fast Freddie Bynum off the roster. Except Bynum had a good 63 points of OPS on Pagan. Heck, Juan Pierre had a higher OPS than Pagan. I disliked Bynum as much as the next guy, but I don't understand why we give Pagan an easier time. Is it his cool name? Pagan can at least field pretty well... Bynum is a utility guy who sucks at fielding.
