  1. Agreed. Even if it's only someone like Westbrook or Jennings, we need to get at least one of them. Lilly and Jennings I could tolerate and we could have a decent rotation. Lilly and Meche is garbage. So you don't want Lilly or Meche, but you do want Jennings, a guy who had an ERA+ below 100 and a WHIP over 1.55 in 2003, 2004, and 2005? And willing to give up minor league talent to get him? Yes. Jennings is a rental and won't cost us 5/55. Still, you're giving up minor league talent for a rental in a year in which it's unlikely the Cubs will win anything. Don't see the point.
  2. Who's Sean Hill? Veteran defenseman on the New York Islanders. Not sure if the Cubs have the ability or right to trade him.
  3. then we'll be seeing you next November Truffle. overreacting a little? the off season has three and a half months left, and if Hill comes anywhere near what most experts are projecting, the Cubs already have a solid number two. the season's not over by any means. yeah, I was just making a joke about the collective spaz everyone had upon hearing the news
  4. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say an average outfielder in his early 30s and a few not-so-great pitching prospects are not going to fetch a 25 year old guy who is at least a #2, and maybe a #1 if he puts it all together like he did in 2004.
  5. This actually isn't that easy for me. Lilly has been better, and is more reliable. Meche does have some potential, and his K-rate increased significantly, along with a few of his other peripherals. If there's a guy who will surprise and actually earn the exorbitant contract he'll get, it's probably Meche. On the other hand, he really hasn't been that good the past four years, and he's a larger injury risk. It could end up being four years of what the Yankees have gotten out of Carl Pavano. Meche is probably a higher reward, but also a higher risk. I'd go with Lilly, because I think when you pay this much for a pitcher, you want something a little more reliable. But I could see arguments for both (and obviously, against both).
  6. That's the problem, everybody just assumes that we could get as much from "the kids" as we would from someone like Lilly. Hill panned out, but who else was there? Well, let's go through last year's options: Marshall: Oft-injured, 5.59 ERA in 2006 Guzman: Oft-injured, 7.39 ERA (with Cubs) in 2006 Mateo: 5.32 ERA Marmol: Had to go on DL, 6.08 ERA If you think you can rely on those guys to do as well or even nearly as well as Lilly/Meche, you're really grasping at straws. Prior and Miller are also in the mix, but Prior will get hurt, and Miller has questions about his durability and stuff. If you go into next year with Zambrano, Hill, and three of the options listed above, you're accepting that the Cubs will be a lousy team again. That's fine, but don't delude yourself into thinking that this team would be in the playoff hunt. ... and you think Lilly and Meche are going to lead us to the promise land? ROFL I think out of those 4 guys you mentioned and Prior/Miller you get at least the production that Lilly/Meche +whoever would give you and probably better production. fine, but stats don't support this at all

  8. That game isn't even on sportsbook.com to be wagered upon. That's how bad it's going to be. I actually don't think it will be a total slaughter. HC does have good defense and decent inside play, and Duke's offense has been struggling so far this year. I'm not saying HC will win or even have a chance tonight, but I do think the fact that both teams have better defense than offense will hold the score down and keep the game from being a 40 point romp.
  9. I highly doubt this. If he valued staying on the West Coast, I don't see him leaving for just two years and then likely going back. He got a really good deal from the Dodgers. Regardless of what the Cubs threw at him, $16M per year and living where you want to live is hard to buy a guy out of.
  10. I'm all for signing guys who used to be good to minor league deals. See if you can get them straightened out, and if not, nothing lost.

  12. I agree with you. I can't imagine another year of Z, Hill and whomever is the flavor of the week to fill out the rotation. Exactly..I couldnt stand to see anymore of that revolving garbage of Guzman,Marmol,Waldrond why are you putting Walrond with guys like Guzman and Marmol? Walrond was an emergency starter, just like O'Malley. We didn't have another option. Well, if we go into next year without a guy who will likely make nearly all of his starts, then we'll have three guys in the rotation who get hurt every other week, and we'll probably see scrubs like Walrond making more emergency starts.
  13. Haha, I wonder who has a better chance to win a World Series? The team with a $200M payroll, 26 titles and 12 straight playoff appearances, or the team with incompetent management, 98 years since the last WS victory, and the 3rd worst record in baseball last year?
  14. Can't see the Cubs getting a #2 without giving up a piece of their major league team (someone like Murton/Hill) or trading away some top minor league talent. I'd rather the Cubs not do this. If we really want a good pitcher, let's wait til next offseason. Here are some options: Bronson Arroyo (not sure if he's UFA yet) Buehrle (if he bounces back) Freddy Garcia Aaron Harang (UFA?) Jason Jennings Joe Nathan (not a starter, but he's really good) Jake Westbrook Plus you've got guys on small-market teams getting further into arbitration, when you might be able to get them more cheaply. I don't think the Cubs are gonna win this year, so I'd rather they not mortgage the future.
  15. What's the point in any of this? 99% of the players we talk about as potential help for the team will never be Cubs. Just because Jim Hendry is unlikely to do something doesn't mean it's not worth a discussion. We've already discussed Bonds. We already know that he won't be playing here, while we didn't know that with guys like Schmidt and Lugo.
  16. Yeah, with the way these contracts are going, I'd almost rather the Cubs work a deal with the Yankees for Pavano or Wright with the Yankees picking up part of the tab. No thanks, I'd rather have someone who will pitch 100 innings this year.
  17. I thought Gonzalez was going to the Cardinals? I wish he was; he's not good any more. He did put out 52 doubles last year, good for a tie for 2nd in MLB. Yeah they start testing for roids, and his HR power turns into doubles power. No connection, I'm sure. OPS+ the last four years: 131/119/112/97 Not a good trend. With him in his late 30s, there's no reason to think the slide won't continue.
  18. Bruce already said, emphatically, that Bonds will not be a Cub. I guess it's cool to play fantasy GM and all, but I don't see the point in going through this a 5th time.
  19. Any chance Holy Cross comes within 15 of Duke tonight?
  20. I thought Gonzalez was going to the Cardinals? I wish he was; he's not good any more.
  21. You get better production from Schmidt and Marshall/Guzman than you do from Lilly and Meche, and you do so while only having one long-term contract on the books.
