It wouldn't be the blockbuster trade that all of us are waiting for, but the Detroit papers are reporting that the Tigers are desperate for pitching and a player who might be available is Brandon Inge. Inge would be great on the bench as a backup at C, 3B, & OF with very good defense at all 3 positions. A guy that versatile would give Dusty a lot of options. How about Mitre & Welly for Inge?

How is he different from John Mabry. Assuming Hendry wants to win more than 8 games this year, he'll find a RF, moving Mabry to the bench. Correct me if I'm wrong, but their roles seem similar and not necessary to stock up on.

Maybe a little redundant. Other than being RH, I guess I agree with Electron that Inge doesn't really bring anything more than Mabry. It might be a good idea for Hendry to pursue a RH bat with some more pop for the bench. Right now, the Cubs bench is pretty "light" hitting.

I just thought that it would rid us of 2 pitchers we might lose and give us a young (28), versatile, and cheap ($1.3 million) player. Assuming we had a bench of Inge, Mabry, Hairston, Perez, and Blanco, we would have guys who could do a decent job pinch hitting and could "catch the ball" when needed. Also, you would have a decent sub for every position, in case of injury.

I see what you're saying. However, I'd like to see someone who is more of a power threat brought in to come off the bench. Is that possible? I don't know. But with Mabry and Neifi you already have two backup 3B. Mabry and Hairston can both play outfield. Mabry can play 1B. Hairston and Neifi can play 2B. I looks to me like they have the positions pretty well covered. What I'm interested in now is a solid PH threat more than anything.

I'm wondering how popular this would be, and I'm not sure how willing the player would be, but maybe try offering 5 mil to Frank Thomas for a year, and play him off the bench, occasionally spot start Lee or Ramirez. If he'd be willing to come North to prove that he can still play while limiting action so he doesn't get injured . . . I don't think ANYONE up here would mind having him. Just a thought.

Thomas can play zero defense so I don't see him coming to the NL. His future is as a DH.

Um, I would mind considerably if anybody brought in Frank Thomas to play third base, even if for only an inning.
