Yankees manager Joe Torre said Monday the club is keeping its options open for its pressing need of a center fielder, including the possible use of one of its two All-Star-caliber shortstops, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.

Torre said he has considered the merits of converting either shortstop Jeter or AL MVP Rodriguez, who has been playing third base since joining the Yankees, but has not raised the subject with either of his star players.

"We've thought about it," Torre said. "We just haven't made a commitment to that. We haven't broached it with the shortstops."

Is it really that hard to find someone who can play adequate CF?

Maybe it's just leverage against Damon or something.

That's a really bad attempt at it if it is.

Leverage? Since when have the Yankees been concerned about driving the price down on any player?

If they can pay Jeter 19m to be an average SS and Mussina 17m to be an average starter, then they should at least pay Giles 21m to be a great oufielder.

Offensively Jeter is an outstanding shortstop, easily among the best in the game. His extremely poor defense mitigates that somewhat, but I'd still rate him as a very, very good middle infielder.

Getting to my actual point, the Yankees overpay for everyone they sign. It's a pipe dream if they think they can sign Giles, and underpay to get him. If the Yankees really wanted Giles, I would think that the bidding would start at 15m a year.

Can't really argue with that. Cashman isn't really a bad GM, though; he's just using the resources made available to him.

Jeter's defense is not "extremely poor." I believe he rated amongst the top five SS defensively this year and last.

Wouldn't the Yankees be a good fit for Patterson? They don't need tremendous offensive production from their CF just good defense. And I think they can afford to have one blackhole in their lineup.

Other than the fact that Yankees fans are quick to turn on guys, yes, he would be a good fit. And they have talked about him as a fallback plan. Damon and Cameron were more popular names. While they like Pierre because of how the 2003 WS ended. But Patterson is in the discussion (among media and fans, not sure about the decision makers).

By what metric? UZR isn't publicly available anymore, but it always had Jeter among (if not the) worst defenders at SS. Baseball Prospectus' methods tended to agree. I'll grant you that he's been a much better defender over the past couple years, but even then he's no better than average. Taking his career as a whole his D has just been atrocious.

Just heard the radio that Torre also told the reporter that their best cf on the team was Marion Rivera and they are thinking of moving him also. I think he was jesting the reporter who took the ball and ran with it.
