The A's are close to signing free agent right-hander Esteban Loiaza to a three-year contract for slightly more than $21 million, FOXSports.com has learned.

It is unclear whether the addition of Loiaza would affect Oakland's decision on whether to trade left-hander Barry Zito. A's GM Billy Beane has said he does not need to trade Zito for financial reasons, but Beane generally listens to offers for all of his players.

Good question. Don't know what Beane has up his sleeve, but this one doesn't make much sense.

Loiaza would be good in that park. Zito, Loiaza, Harden, Haren, Blanton is a pretty solid rotation. I think Zito is gone though.

Harden, Zito, Haren, Blanton, Loaiza is a pretty solid rotation. But the A's certainly (assuming similar payroll restrictions as years past) shouldn't be blowing 7M on a 5th starter.

Even Loaiza is getting the 3/21 deal?

He doesn't strike out many people, but he doesn't walk guys either. He had a bounceback year in 2005 after the letdown of 2004. HR have given him trouble in his down years, Beane must be hoping 16 starts in Oakland will help with that problem. I'm guessing he's capable of a 200 inning sub 4 ERA season, but I wouldn't lock him up for 3 years at $7m, especially as a lower payroll team. And he's only done that twice in a 11 year career.

Is there any contract NSBB is going like? At first I thought the Cubs deals (and the Ryan deal) were overpaying but now I'm not so sure.

Who knows. It's very possible that we'll look back at these signings at the end of the offseason and say they were great deals, that's not possible right now because no other free agents have signed yet.

Beane is on the bottle.

It doesn't matter what the FA market is like. You don't need to throw away money in free agency when everyone is as willing to trade as they are.

Who's trying to move starting pitching right now? Trading for guys is still going to be costly.

Do you think he might try to sign Farns and Furcal so he will have some drinking buddies

Lowe, Clement, Wells, and Beckett are all widely known to be (were in Beckett's case) available. GMs are trade happy right now with the weak FA class. Tons of teams have money.

Costly? It isn't going to cost more $-wise than the current FA market. Prospects? Just look for the right deal.

Considering cost prospect and $ wise of the Delgado and Beckett deals I'm not so sure of that.

Just look for the right deal? Easier said then done.

This market is really overheated.

fans of anger should really go to elephantsinoakland and hit f5 until zach has his new post up.
Why did I not know that F5 refreshed the page? Wow I feel dumb.

By the way, turns out I know your girlfriend from the EIU orchestra. Small world.

She told me that she met someone who said he posted at NSBB, but she could only remember that your name had Nomar in it, so I wasn't sure who it was, since we have a few of those.

Small world indeed.
