I've just posted on another thread expanding on the idea of a trade for castillo. This is an idea i ripped from goony who stated on another thread that a marginal upgrade on the IF ie the huge price we would pay for Furcal is not worth more than trying to vastly improve our pathetic OF situation. I think this deserves a thread to itself as i would like one of our resident numbers guys to look at what we could get with Castillo at lead off compared to Furcal. How much money could this move save us?. What do people feel about castillo leading off with Murton hitting 2nd?. What about the idea of either Hairston and CPatt platooning? or adding Lofton?. Obviously this frees up cash for the pursuit of a bat. So the big Question is would louis Castillo for Walker and a couple of arms be a far more efeective move than Furcal and Pierre?.

If the White Sox and others are now going to be involved in a bidding war for Pierre, I think it would be a wise move to see if we could get Castillo for much cheaper. If the White Sox really want Pierre, I could see them giving up Anderson, and I don't think we could match that. If we could get Castillo for ,say, Walker and Pinto, I'd do that. We'd still have money to go after Furcal, and then we could go after someone like Bradley for CF.

Offensively I don't see him as an upgrade over Walker. Defensively he would be better than Walker (and so would I....), but the ~$10M he's owed over the next two years offsets that.

In today's Daily Herald from Barry Rozner, see Marlin Fishing:

Are you trying to imply that you were the first to think of trading for Luis Castillo? Or are you simply pointing out that Rozner is a complete hack unable to compose an unprompted thought?

Neither. I'm pointing out that the idea of the Cubs trading for Castillo is now out there in the public domain. GMs can claim all they want that they don't read the newspapers, but we know it simply is not true.

Negative comments about Mr. Rozner are completely unwarranted Don. Mr. Rozner is a well respected columnist in this town, who has built up a tremendous network within the Cubs, Sox, Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawk organizations. He is so gifted and well-liked that Ryne Sandberg mentioned him by name during his Hall of Fame induction speech, as an example. Regardless of the Tribune Co. owning the Cubs, it's the Daily Herald guys like Mr. Miles and Mr. Rozner, who are "in the know" on all things Cubs.

I think he would improve it, I'd say Castillo would be more productive at the top of the order than Walker. It would also improve the defense at the up the middle as well. Going from a combo of Walker-Perez/Nomar to Castillo/Cedeno is an upgrade defensively as well as offensively.

Depending on their budget and who would have to be included, I think Castillo would be a nice fit at the top.

I'd address RF and Cf 1st, though.

That's the most gushing paragraph of nonsense I've ever read. Gifted? We're not talking about John Updike here. He's a sportswriter whose columns generally consist of recycled thoughts, reader submissions and bad Alex Kaseberg jokes. Ryne Sandberg mentioned Rozner because the Roz spent the better part of the last decade sucking up to Ryno. Of course Sandberg likes him.

And yes, I'm sure if the Cubs trade for Castillo, it'll be because you put it out in the public forum. Good work. They probably didn't even know he existed until you took all the discussion from this board, put it into an e-mail, fired it off to Rozner and claimed it as your own.

We'll have to agree to disagree on Rozner. I like him, and have been reading him for years, so I believe he has very good insights; you dislike him, that's your opinion, I respect that.

I would love to have Castillo. I wanted him when he was a FA a couple of years ago. Somebody mentioned he has had leg problems but I dont know nothing about that. We trade for Castillo put Cedeno at SS which is fine with me but if that happened I would like a trade for Bradley and a good RF to happen as well.

Castillo's health problems worry me. Plus, Dusty would try to steal with him too much. Dude's got wheels...(but he still sucks at stealing bases despite his speed).
