Even after the firesale, it's still probably better than coaching the Devil Rays. Joe's likely still happy with his choice.

If management let's Joe mold this team of young 'uns without trading people out from under him, it could be a very rewarding challenge

it's perfect. after realizing the value of young players with lots of first hand experience, Joe will replace Dusty as cubs manager somewhere in the not so distant future.

After a discouraging first year in Florida, where he won't hestitate to leave once the offer was on the table! Question is, who would we have to send to FLA as compensation after this season...

I don't think that'd be enough. Throw in Macias (assuming he isn't cut when we sign Mabry). Other than that, where do we sign?

I gotta think that Joe knew what the plan was when he signed on. He has a great chance to develop some youngsters around the two cornerstones of that franchise (Willis and Cabrera).

I think it also means that LoDuca may be the only one who is spared a ticket out of town. My hunch is that Joe wants a veteran backstop to nurture the Younglings who will be toeing the mound for the Fish over the next two seasons.

I agree that this gives Girardi a chance to mold young players and I would assume there will be no expectation of winning. Could be a great opportunity for Joe after a couple of years.

Hey Joe, do you want us to trade away all of our talent so you can mold young players or do you want us to keep the good guys and win some games?

Joe: Uhh, I won a bunch with the Yankees. Tell those all stars to hit the road. Yippeeeeeee!

Marlins might get even less back for Beckett than has been reported:

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/13247113.htm

DEADLINE TODAY

Meanwhile, barring the granting of an extension, the Marlins and Red Sox have until today to complete their deal within the required 72-hour window.

The Marlins had to give up Beckett in order to get rid of Lowell, who is down to receive $9 million each of the next two seasons.

But sources said there is growing concern among the Red Sox about Beckett's shoulder, and it could lead to an amended deal in which the Marlins might have to either absorb some of the money left owed to Lowell or receive lesser prospects as part of the trade.

My guess is if the Red Sox try to amend the deal, the Marlins will pull it off the table and make the deal with Texas for Blalock and Danks and then spin Blalock for more prospects.

Well, Joey G. seems to have drunk the kool-aid:

Even though the Marlins are cashing in top players for prospects, Joe Girardi said he isn't second-guessing his decision to take the Marlins' managing job despite the trading frenzy that has diluted the team's roster.

''I knew it going in, and I'm not concerned,'' Girardi said in a phone interview Thursday. ``Actually, I'm kind of excited.''

Girardi, who was hired in mid-October, said the front office has kept him apprised of plans to slash payroll. . . .

''The prospects coming back have a chance to be super players,'' Girardi said. Beinfest said he felt Ramirez ''has the chance to be an impact everyday shortstop,'' that Petit and Sanchez have a chance to immediately step into the Marlins' rotation along with Dontrelle Willis and other young candidates, and that Jacobs could vie for the starting job at first base.

Must be hanging out with those Cubs fans, who believe Brian Giles will be in Chicago in 2006.
