Other than the fact that it was allowed last year can anyone justify why it is necessary that we should allow polls about hottest chicks on a baseball website?

Why allow a social forum? Why have a rants forum? Why allow anything not baseball related?

70% of the posts on this board aren't 'necessary'. But the HCP were fun, just like a lot of the non-baseball aspects of this board.

Can you justify that anything is necessary on this board? I'm still waiting for the justification that it needed to be cancelled.

It was offensive to some and a divisive presence on the board. that's pretty good justification to take it off. The other things you mention aren't.

Over half of the posts in Rants are offensive to somebody in the community, and most of those concern subjects that are actually worthy of a big fuss. Those battles will rage on, yet the harmless HCP has been snuffed.

Many of the battles that are waged in rants also have value as a conversation (obviously not all). Also, that still doesn't justify its presence as much as also damn the other conversations. That rationale is akin to someone doing drugs because everyone else is doing it. That still doesn't make it right.

The line has to be drawn somewhere. It's a very fuzzy territory, though, and we do the best we can.

I did justify it, and I did explain it in my original post. I thought it was pretty clear.

1. NSBB is a family-friendly site. Kids post here, as do women, and we need to be welcoming of everyone.

2. Given the nature of the site, the content of the polls were to be PG-rated. However, much of the posted content was well beyond that rating level.

3. Much of the commentary about the various "candidates" was completely out-of-line, and some of it was very degrading to women in general.

4. We received many complaints and there were concerns about the polls.

5. It very quickly became an extremely divisive issue for many members of this community.

Frankly, it's not impossible that we didn't act with proper celerity to shut down the polls, and by allowing things to slide in the early going we perhaps created a belief that such examples were allowabl. If so, that's a mistake we made in not keeping close tabs on the polls. Perhaps, too, a better discussion is whether we erred in having such a poll last winter.

I don't know, and I suspect there's no way to get at the answer.

Rocket, there's really no way to defend many of the comments made in those polls, as well as some of the pictures themselves. Perhaps it was fun and enjoyable for you -- along with many other posters -- but there were many people for which it was not fun, and not enjoyable.

What I don't understand about this whole thing is the way that the situation was handled. You could have stopped it from the beginning when Vance had the initial thread asking if people wanted it back. I never read that thread, but I assume that there weren't many if any objections to bringing the poll back. You could have PMed Vance when he posted the pictures asking him to tone it down and remove whatever pics were over the line. You could have made comments in the threads that the posts were out of line. You didn't have to make such a big deal of it. You didn’t have to sticky a thread at the top of the forum that starts with a post that obviously insults the members that took part in the threads. I understand why you wouldn’t want the threads going on, but the way that it has been handled isn’t something that I expect from the mods of this site. Frankly, it disappoints me.

Drugs?

I'll grant that there are people in this world who would be offended by the polls, as you can always find someone to get in a fuss over anything. I question whether or not that type of person is at the core of this site's audience, and disagree with the repeated characterization of poll participants as outlaws.

Fair enough. There's plenty of disappointment to go around.

I just want to throw a few comments out there.

1. Tim's running a business here, and if he feels that he'll lose customers by allowing the hot chick polls, then that's something he has to consider. Of course, he has to consider the fact that he might lose customers by not allowing them too, but I doubt that people are going to stop visiting NSBB because hot chick polls were canceled. Ya never know though, they might leave based on principle.

2. I enjoyed the threads - I love this site and all that it offers and having good looking women here and there made it even better.

3. Who were the people that were complaining? Women? Gee, what a shocker. I hate it when people complain about something that is so easily avoidable. If you're a woman and you're going to be offended by pictures of women wearing bikinis or what-not, then wouldn't it be logical to stay out of those threads?

4. I respect the mods decision, however, wouldn't it have been a better idea to issue a warning saying to tone it down a bit before just taking them down altogether? Also, in the fairness of democracy, how about a poll asking your members/customers what they want.

that actually did happen, though they ended up deleting everything almost immediately after.

Yeah, a warning was posted, and that was quickly followed by a number of comments mocking that warning.

I think people just need to let it go already. I enjoyed the contest, posted pictures, but it wasn't that big of a deal that it was taken down. I was a little upset that there wasn't really a reason given, but the mods have given their side of the story now. I understand why the mods did it and I understand why Tim doesn't want it on his site. The jokes and the complaining are getting old. If you want a hot chick contest College Humor is having one right now. Let it go already.

Oh it's not a big deal to me at all, I was just throwing out some random thoughts that I had.

If I really wanted to see pictures of scantily clad women, I have a hunch that there are other sites out there that could fulfill that desire.

I never formally complained about the polls to a mod/admin. I thought there were many distasteful pictures in the threads that were not conducive to this site being family friendly. After a short time of the polls being up, I did quit clicking them. I was not interested in seeing those women. But, my objection to the threads was more about the site being family friendly. I wasn't concerned about myself clicking on the threads as I know better than that. My concern was more about my young male cousin who will frequent this site while at my house. I feel pretty safe allowing him to browse the board and read things on here without my needing to watch him over his shoulder. However, once the polls went up and the pictures that were being posted, I no longer felt comfortable allowing him to peruse the site unsupervised. If I had one young child looking at this site, I'm sure many more posters did as well and we shouldn't have to censor what threads they navigate.

It doesn't matter to me anymore (but I do think it should have been handled another way), but I just had to laugh at some of the words used to explain why this poll was canceled. Like "soft core pornogrohy." Go ahead and delete this message, but I am sorry that was funny to me.

It's nice that we can all still voice our opinions like this, but the fact is if the powers that be don't want it, there aint nuthin we can do about it. we can still enjoy looking at those pics and talking about them in any way we want; it just wont be on this board.

Why would we delete posts like this one?

I can't believe so many people are complaining about this.

hrm, yes should have been worded better. What I MEANT (well ok I meant what I said but for the sake of family friendliness I will restate) was that despite the fact that you don't understand why the people are offended by it, or think that they should just avoid the topic, the bottom line is that Tim makes the calls, and I hardly see why this is causing such an uproar.

BTW, I hardly find it fair to compare hot chicks to the KKK. I hear hot chicks like black guys. :)

Maybe they thought it was a poll on egg incubation because it actually takes a few clicks to get to, so it's not like it was in someones face as soon as they went to northsidebaseball.com and was something they could ignore. However, that's the way the world is and while I might not agree with those opinions, I agree that it's Tim's site and he has every right to control content accordingly.

Yes, the people who complained about it are stupid. They are stupid for clicking on the link to go to the page, and they are stupid for getting offended over something like that. That does not change the fact that this is Tim's site and he decidedes what is and is not allowable. Stop complaining.

Wow. Nothing like calling someone stupid because they are offended by something that you are not.

Please don't call board members stupid. You can express your opinion and say you think it was a stupid thing to complain about, but calling them stupid crosses the line.

I think this logic is stupid. It can be used to justify the most offensive of topics. "If you don't like the KKK, just don't click on the thread."
