The Cubs could go cheap at every other position if they signed Giles. They could trade for:

Lugo

Bradley

Wilkerson

Pierre

etc.....

They can go in house with cheap alternatives as well, like:

Walker at 2nd

Cedeno at SS

If they traded the bag of balls for Bradley, signed Giles and went with Cedeno and Walker, I think they have a solid offense.

Walker, Bradley, Lee, Giles, Ramirez, Murton, Barrett, Cedeno.

There is a ton of money to spend upgrading the bench and/or pitching.

I'm starting to think that none of Giles, Furcal, or Pierre will be a Cub in 2006.

Seeing as Hendry and Baker, but especially Hendry, are in the last year of their contracts you would think Hendry is going to do everything he can to bring in some proven talent, because if he doesn't and the Cubs stink, his stay in Chicago is all but over. It is do or die for Hendry.

Bruce Miles was on and he said that there is about a 40% chance the Cubs trade for Pierre and that number is falling. The Marlins are seeming less interested. He also said theres about 50-60% chance of Furcal coming. He thinks the best fit would be Giles to bat 2nd in front of D Lee.

I don't really want Giles 2nd. I'd rather have him 3rd. Giles would have the highest OBP, so you want your power (Lee, Ramirez) getting the cracks at knocking him in. But Giles also has the ability to knock home some runs. In a perfect world, the Cubs would have a 1-2 combo (Furcal and Walker/Murton) who could get on base 35% of the time in front of Giles, Lee, and ARam. Giles between the 2 RHs would be nice, but I'd rather Lee and/or Ramirez hit with a runner on 40% of the time, than Ramirez and/or Murton/Barrett/whoever.

Dusty has this lefty/righty fetish, you know. If the Cubs sign Giles, you can pencil him in at #4, sandwiched between Lee and Ramirez. It's all but done. Heck, he hit Burnitz in there, he'd surely put Giles in that slot.

I do agree that Giles ahead of Lee, then Ramirez, makes the most baseball sense though.

I'd bet a lot of money that the Marlins wanted at least one of Pie/Hill/Cedeno/Murton and JH didn't budge on it, and that's why the Marlins lost interest. If that's the case, then kudos to Jim and go get Furcal for 4/34.

Agreed. Hendry can't afford to have another terrible offseason, because it will cost him his job. He better at least try to improve this team as best he can fort his year or he may be done.

You would think, yes. But this is Jim Hendry. And the Chicago Cubs.

Got to use the vacation time at some point or else I lose it. I'll be back in the fray at the beginning of next week. I'll be attending the winter meetings, as usual, too. Hang in there.

Wow, you even check in here when you're on vacation. Sweet! :D

Hey Bruce, just wanted to see if that was in fact you that posted at Desipio.com's boards the other day. Anyways if that was you, don't take Andy's comments to heart (as I'm sure you didn't). The site is a great read, even if he rips on everyone and everything Cubs (except Lee and Zambrano).
