As the thread with Levine in the title was getting more than its (deserved) share of anti Levine banter, I thought I'd start this to have a more centered discussion on what people thought the chance of NY actually not signing him was, and if it happened...what does that do to the FA market....If he goes I think Giles takes his place, so maybe its not as big a hiccup as we might think...who knows...thoughts?

Hideki spent 10 years in Tokyo playing for the most popular team in Japan, and he views the Yankees as the MLB equivalent. He's not going anywhere.

Yeah, his agent is just trying to get him top dollar. Heck, if Derek Jeter makes 19m and Matsui's production is as good or better than Jeter, why shouldn't he also be making 19m from the Yanks?

Give it to him, George!

Yanks signed him to a 4 year, $51 million contract

The Yankees and Hideki Matsui have reached an agreement in principle on a four-year deal worth about $51 million, people familiar with the negotiations said.

General manager Brian Cashman and Matsui's agent, Arn Tellem, have been in close contact all day and are putting the finishing touches on the contract, one person familiar with the situation said.

The deal, which does not include an option for a fifth year, is expected to be officially announced tomorrow.

Nah, I think teams are going to overvalue the 8 extra homeruns and the 100+ RBI's Matsui had. Nevermind that Matsui is 3 years younger.

I think Giles gets 4/40, and I'm probably desperate enough to sign it...

This is not good new for teams wanting to sign Giles.

The Yankees don't set the bar when it comes to free agents. There is the amount that 28 other teams might pay, and then there is the amount Boston and New York will pay.

Mussina 17m

Jeter 21m

Giambi 19m

K. Brown 15m

The list goes on and on......

Kenny Lofton got 1 year/1m at the last minute from the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2003. In 2004, Lofton signed a 2 year/6m deal to play for the Yankees.

I think Matsui's signing relates very little to Giles.

except that the Yankees were rumored to have gone after Giles should the Matsui dealhave fallen through

The new rumor is they'll still go after Giles even with Matsui in the fold.

Oh the Yankees will go after Giles. He fits their profile. Aging vet who stil puts up good numbers.

If I were an odds maker I'd have them at:

50:50 he signs with St. Louis

3:2 he stays in SD

3:1 Yankees

10:1 Red Sox

50:1 Cubs
