If you could have Lugo and Brian Giles or Furcal and Encarnacion, which would you rather have?

I'll take the first option everyday and twice on Sundays.

What if Lugo cost the Cubs Pie?

Then the Devil Rays will keep BJ Upton in the minors for another year because no one would trade for Lugo at that cost.

He will cost some team some talent Raisin, maybe not Pie talent but some pretty decent talent.

Agreed, but the DRays aren't getting a top-25 MLB prospect for him. They're more likely to get something like Hill and Nolasco for him.

I'd probably make that deal if the saved money would help us land Giles.

One year of Lugo isn't worth 2 of our best pitching prospects that are both near ML-ready.

It's not a fair question. You're listing a 2nd option at SS with a 1st option in RF, then a 1st option at SS with a 10th option in RF.

To make it an even statement, I go with Furcal and Floyd.

[edit - smelling pistakes]

No, it is a fair question. Lugo/Giles will probably cost about the same amount as Furcal/Encarnacion. Furcal/Floyd would cost more.

I don't think it's a fair question...you're only considering the '06 budget and not the future opportunity cost of the lost prospects when weighing the trades. I would rather have Lugo and Giles over Furcal end Encarnacion, but getting Lugo instead of Furcal doesn't mean squat when it comes to who we sign for RF. As far as we know, Giles has no interest in coming here, regardless of who we sign at SS, so we may as well go for the best option at SS. Each position should be weighed independently, and we should take the best guy available, unless the best guy available is not available for a someone reasonable price (i.e. I'm not giving someone with JD Drew's injury history the money that Depoidiot gave him last offseason, even if he is the best available).

i hope hendry raps up this Furcal signing by the end of the weekend and can turn his attention to a big bat for the outfield, a new center fielder, getting AJ Burnett , and signing Dotel and Sanez.

Looks like Furcal wants 50 million over 5 or 6 years according to his agent and he will play anywhere including center field.

Normal agent talk IMO. Try and get as much money as you can by telling the media ridiculous #'s and saying you're open to playing anywhere. Remember last year and Beltran's 10-year hopes. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Kind of like

"Raffy is OK with playing shortstop, second base or center field," Kinzer said. "Just give him a glove and he will play wherever you ask him to."

Raffy can't cook without the dough. He just wants to gets the Mets in increasing the offers.

I don't know. It sounds like he is going to the highest bidder to me. Just like Beltran and countless others IMO. Oh well maybe Nomar will sign and actually stay healthy for more than 2 months next year. Maybe.
