Originally, I liked the idea of letting Furcal re-sign with Atlanta and targeting Marcus Giles in trade. Doing this would go a long way toward bringing Brian on board. Problem is, we still don't have a "Dusty Proof" leadoff hitter. The cubs could go get Juan Pierre, but that idea has not met with much approval. There has also been mention of bringing in Kenny Lofton for a season. IMO, Lofton is an older, slower version of Juan Pierre. As for shortstop, the Cubs could re-sign Nomar. This would be a formidable lineup but it would financially limit what could be done to improve the bench. rotation and bullpen.

CF Pierre $5.0M

2B M Giles $3.5M

RF B Giles $9.0M

1B D Lee $8.0M

3B A Ramirez $10.5M

SS N Garciaparra $6.0M

CF M Bradley $3.8M

LF M Murton $0.3M

C M Barrett $4.0M

--------

$50.1M

FYI, Sauerbeck just signed a deal today with Cleveland. Therefore he cannot be moved until the trade deadline.

Don't plan on Nomar & Walker as the MI for the Cubs, Hendry has made it perfectly clear he wants to improve the defense.

Sauerbeck was just resigned by the Indians, but i like the rest. it's certainly better than we're going to see in '06.

Since Sauerbeck has been inked, change it to Eyre.

Hendry will make a huge listake by overpaying for Furcal, I wouldn't Castillo or Giles, but Furcal's speed and strong arm can't hide the fact someone will overspend for him.

I doubt he'll be as bad as Renteria or Cabrera, but you won't get you money's worth by anything near 9 or 10 per.

Is anyone else enjoying the irony of someone worried about "overpaying for Furcal" advocating the signing of Scott Eyre?

I guess the magnitude of Eyre's overpayment is going to be smaller, but still...

Let's see a LOOGY who over the last 3 years has held LH hitters.

81.2IP 59H 5HR 26BB 73K

Oh the irony of wanting someone who has almost struck out as many batters as he allowed to get on base.

Yeah, they're almost the same.

Where's the irony?

I fail to see the irony or whatever cute point you were trying to make, one will likely be correctly paid for his production (Eyre) and one likely won't be (Furcal). Eyre is one of the better LOOGYs in the League and will get paid accordingly while Furcal will likely follow the trend of last year's crop of SS and be overpaid.
