Downey suggested it in this morning's Trib. At least, unlike Sullivan, he clearly makes it a suggestion, and not something that is likely to happen.

Thoughts?

I wonder if the Sox could score a good young player by agreeing to take on his salary. I also wonder who they'd have to trade. Would you deal one of their SPs for Thome and a prospect, w/ the Phils picking up a portion of Thome's money?

Which SP would you think they would give up? Contreras would seem to be the most likely candidate. I can't see them trading the first 3 and I'm sure the Phils don't want Hernandez. Also, I'm sure the Sox won't trade McCarthy. If I was Kenny Williams, I'd look into Delgado from the Marlins.

Overbay would also make sense seeing he is in the same situation as Thome. Fielder is going to be the 1st baseman for the Brewers eventually, so maybe the Sox could trade a starter to Milwaukee for Overbay.

It would depend on how much cash the Phillies are picking up. I'd rather go after Delgado if I were the Sox.

Even if Konerko stays, it might make sense for them (money issues aside). Thome isn't exactly the greatest defensive first baseman to begin with, and with his history of back problems and other injuries, the odds of him playing out a full season there are slim anyway. But, they dumped Everett (at least until the trading deadline...heh), dumped Thomas, so they could conceivably pick up Thome for DH and occasional first base duties. If Konerko does leave, then I agree, Delgado would make much more sense. I just dont see Thome ever being able to handle a full season in the field again.

Thome would come cheaper than Overbay in terms of what the White Sox would have to give up. The Sox have managed to get a good amount of playoff revenue to play around with in this offseason, so they potentially could afford to add Thome's salary.

Thome is problematic. He turns 36 some time next season and is well past his prime. He's had some injury problems that are troubling. When he's healthy, he's one of the best sluggers in baseball.

I don't see the White Sox trading Chris Young, as much as the Philles would likely covet him. The Phillies need young pitching with some experience, so McCarthy fits the bill pretty well. The White Sox also have some intriguing pitching prospects (Liotta, Gonzalez, Tracey) who could make an attractive package.

Interestingly, while looking up Thome, I found a news story from the Minneapolis Star Tribune that had a Thome to the Twins rumor floating around. Hmmmmmmmmmmm...

That is interesting. Wonder if that might motivate Williams to get involved.

And I think Contreras is the guy to trade. You caught lightning in a bottle this year - trade while value is high\.

ESPN 1000/Bruce Levine reported this morning that the Sox are in talks with PHI about a Thome for Rowand with Contreras or McCarthy swap with the Sox picking up 2/3 of the remaining 3yrs/$42mil on Thome's contract. Levine reports if this goes down, the Sox will still have enough cash left to resign Konerko.

Wow. Giving up Rowand, one of two VERY good starters AND picking up 2/3 of Thome's contract? Talk about overkill.

If I were Williams, I wouldn't do it. Maybe Roward and picking up half of Thome's contract, but not the deal as stated.

and that's the story I've heard. i think he's be a great DH for the Sox. They shouldn't give up McCarthy, and they still need to sign Paulie.

possibly won't have to get in to this deal. If they aquire rowand they HAVE to deal an OF. Who is the best fit?? what would phillies want??. I have to say i think the sox get fleeced if the deal includes a pitcher as well, then again this is being reported by levine................

I had heard this too and was talking with the Twins beatwriter who's a big Sox fan (he watches Bears games at the same bar I do) and he agreed that it made more sense to go for Overbay who was a pretty productive player. I have to agree with Outshined One's assessment of Thome's concerns.
