Chicago Sports

With free-agent right fielder Brian Giles appeared headed for St. Louis, the Cubs are likely to sign or trade for one or possibly two outfielders, depending on the Patterson decision. Florida center fielder Juan Pierre reportedly is on the market, and despite a down year with a .276 average and .326 on-base percentage, his 57 steals and experience as a leadoff man would aid the Cubs.

It's Sullivan though. Grain of Salt comes to mind in a hurry.

Posted

Yep. I can't remember the last time Sullivan had a scoop on anything.

Here's hoping he's wrong about this and his "right fielder with more speed than power" idea.

Posted

Bruce mentioned something about Pierre as well.

Leading man: One of the top priorities for the Cubs this winter will be a leadoff man. If the Florida Marlins make center fielder Juan Pierre available, look for the Cubs to get involved.

If the Cubs can land Pierre, they’d likely try to deal center fielder Corey Patterson, who suffered through a miserable year at the plate.

They need a LF and RF, plus Edmonds is getting older and has been showing signs the last couple years of being injured later in the year. They have no position players in the minors ready to step up and only questionable pitching(Marquis) to trade. It wouldn't surprise me for them to go after Giles hard. I hope they do what they always do, overspend for 1 player and hurt their overall team.

They're in so much trouble that they will probably win the Central Division by only 10-12 games next year. Their policy of overspending for 1 player and hurting the overall team should hasn't seemed to hurt them the last few seasons.

Outside of the aging problem, you pretty much just described the Cubs outfield situation as well.

I don't want Giles anywhere near St. Louis...bring him here, Jim.

When last seen, the Cards were packing their cars after the Stros buried them. How did that Larry Walker deal work out for you?

First of all, Cards is really stupid.

Second of all, There's not one of us who wouldn't have wanted the Cards' success this year. The playoffs are a crapshoot, losing in them doesn't make you inferior, especially coming from a fan of a team who missed the playoffs.

Thirdly, I'm pretty sure the Walker deal worked out fine for them. They got him for basically nothing, and at a discount, and now I don't think they have to pay his buyout since he retired. Sounds like a sweet deal to me.

I second every part of this.

BTW, I highly doubt Backtobanks is a Cards fan... He's just acknowledging, as most of us with a brain do, that the Cards have run their organization far better than the Cubs have the last few years (er, always).

I don't think Backtobanks is a Cardinal fan, but is just stating an observation. Let's keep the smack talk in the Rivalries forum, if we have to do it at all.

I agree with you, right up until you added that needless hyperbole at the end. I realize this is ancient history, but for the time being, it's all we've got.

The Cardinals and the Cubs are not even allowed to talk to Giles' agent at this point. The only team allowed to negotiate with him is the Padres. How one can speculate that he is expected to head to St. Louis seems a bit odd. I guess that goes with all those that expected Beltran to be a Yankee last year. No one even knows what the Cards are willing to offer Giles, or even if he has any interest in playing there.

Laugh if you must.... but in the whole history of the game, only 4 teams have been able to sustain a winning pct of 56% for 50 years. Can you name them ?

edit: Hint. St. Louis isn't one them.

I don't put much stock in these reports.

We've had reports saying that the Padres, Cardinals, and Cubs are all the front runners.

This guy is going to make bank somewhere.

Great trivia question. My guesses:

Yanks

Cubs (late 1800s through first half of 20th century?)

Athletics (beginning in Philly)

Dodgers?

Excellent guess. Replace the A's with the NY/SF Giants, and you're dead on.

I guess I didn't think the Giants sustained that sort of success. I have always been Dodgers-centric b/c my family is (in large part) from Brooklyn and I lived there for some time. I have a great throw-back 1955 Brooklyn hat and a poster with the 1955 team picture, which I love. Had they been in Brooklyn during my childhood (they were long gone by then), I might never have been a Cubs fan.

Great question, Fred. Keep em' coming.

Thanx for the kind words. I'm sure you'll appreciate the great contrast between the Dodgers and the Giants, with the Dodgers winning their first WS in 1955 the year after the Giants won their last one. Consider these 2 time frames......

          1876 thru 1954 World Series
team W L pct PA W L

Los Angeles Dodgers 4939 4740 0.510 7 0 7
San Francisco Giants 5851 4652 0.557 14 5 9

         1955 thru 2005 World Series
team W L pct PA W L

Los Angeles Dodgers 4364 3717 0.540 16 6 5
San Francisco Giants 4190 3895 0.518 8 0 3

That's quite a reversal of fortunes, even though neither team was ever bad for any prolonged period of time.
