Yes, another Patterson thread, but I think this could be a legit discussion instead of just bashing the guy.

One of the most interesting decisions facing Hendry is whether to bring back center fielder Corey Patterson, who regressed at the plate and in the field in '05. Texas is rumored to be interested in making a deal for Patterson, and Hendry is expected to get other feelers if he decides to trade the enigmatic outfielder.

Yeah, Paul Sullivan, too....but still.

What would we be able to get from the Rangers? Is Mench a possibility? Apparently he's on the block (or is going to be). I can't imagine being able to trade Patterson straight up for him, but if it's CP and a low-level prospect, would it be worth it?

What about stepping it up and trying for someone like Michael Young? To be honest, I don't know how high Texas is on Young, but he could certainly solve our problems at shortstop, especially if Nomar is going to want too much money (or Hendry doesn't want to bring him back). He fixed his home/away split problem this year, it appears:

Home: .331/.386/.527

Away: .330/.384/.500

I know Texas had interest in Walker last year - maybe he could be a bargaining chip used to obtain Young (if Texas is willing to give him up, that is). We've got plenty of pitching in the minors, which is something the Rangers are always looking for, too...

I suspect CPatt and Walker for Soriano might be more likely. I don't think Young is going anywhere.

I can't imagine why the Cubs would want Soriano - the exact opposite of the kind of hitter we need.

Because he is the type of player the Cubs seem to covet.

But the toolsy type player that Hendry seems to covet.

Soriano is exactly the kind of player the scout in Hendry would love. Speed and power.

don't rub it in - he could add 30 more solo homers to the offense.

To be fair, wasn't Hendry quoted as saying that the team's OBP needs improvement? Or am I making that up?

In any case, we are not getting Young, so lets put that to bed. Mench is far more likely, but I do not think he is impact bat we need.

Soriano would be a great way to get worse defensively too!

Isn't Young abysmal on defense, too?

As a SS yes, I thought he was avg. defensively as a 2B, although I haven't seen the stats.

I doubt we'll get anything very good for Corey. I'm sure a major reason he is attracting interest is because he's a blue light special.

Probably. The Rangers see a guy with speed who's still pretty young, and that nasty little "p" word starts running through thier minds (you know, "potential").

But they are being opportunistic with his value being as low as it is. Personally, Corey will not be successful here. Not saying he'll never have any vaule anywhere, but he'll never have any value in a Cubs uniform.

There is a rumor that the Rangers have soured on Hank Blalock.

It has been said the Phillies will be seeking a good, young third baseman if they choose to trade Bobby Abreu.

It's unlikely that the Cubs have enough parts to fill in, but there is three-way deal potential there.

Is he really that bad? I know his fielding percentage at SS is around league average, but I honestly know nothing about what kind of range he has.

As far as range, not as bad as putting a china cabinet out there, but it could be close.

A three-team deal would be nice:

Phillies get Blaylock (and possibly a prospect)

Cubs get Abreu

Rangers get Patterson and ???, with ??? = a talented pitcher or two from the Cubs

I'm too lazy to look up salaries right now, but I would think some cash would have to trade hands here, the amount largely dependant on the talent of the prospects included in the trade. Perhaps if the Cubs tossed a high-level prosepct the Rangers way, they could eat some of Abreu's salary.

Feel free to tinker with this as I have put no more than 30 seconds of thought into it.

Yikes. I didn't realize he was that bad.

Worse than watching Orton scramble, huh?

(and this is coming from a fan of both Purdue and the Bears)

I would love to have Young, but I really don't think it'll happen. They have no reason to get rid of a guy like that. The Abreu/Blalock/Patterson and prospects deal sounds intriguing, though, if it's even a remote possibility.

Anyone have any idea why the Rangers would have soured on Blalock? That just seems stupid.
