neifi and macias will file.

Joe is not a free agent. Unless he's released outright or traded (ha!), we won't have a decision on him until mid-December.

Giles is getting less attention than I expected. Much more focus on Furcal and Burnett. Hopefully this is a good sign as it relates to how much we'll need to get him.

Hopefully no one lets Dusty see that Lenny Harris is available.

Oh my god, would love that macias, Perez and Harris, what a bench. I heard that those three make the best cup of coffe in the league.

I'm not sure any of the three should have ever been up to the major leagues for longer than a cup of coffee.

But, BBB, Lenny Harris is the all-time pinch hit appearances leader! And that makes him good! Or at least the people at ESPN seem to think so, as they mention it EVERY DAMN TIME HE STEPS UP TO THE PLATE.

How does a guy end up being the all time pinch hit leader? By sitting on the bench, regularly. That means he wasn't good enough to be an everyday player.

I can only see back to 1987, so I'm probably missing about the first 15 years of Harris' career as a utility player, but as a career pinch hitter he is:

.265/.318/.656

Who do those numbers resemble? They are a lot like Neifi Perez.

Todd Hollandsworth has a career .287/.360/.835 PH record. If guys like Dusty didn't attempt to give a good pinch hitter like Hollandsworth an everyday job, maybe a GOOD pinch hitter would have broken Lenny Harris' record by now.

But, what do I know? I was dumb enough to want Hollandsworth back as a key bat off the bench. Little did I know that this was going to be the last thing Dusty would attempt to use him for.

I'm not sure if you picked up on this or not, but there was a heavy dose of sarcasm involved in that last post. I'm totally with you. I, too, have always thought that Hollandsworth makes a great 4th OF.

Wait, I'm not done having fun with this topic:

Macias as a pinch hitter this year

54 at bats, .185 AVG/.207 OBP/.241 SLG/.448 OPS

13 Total Bases, 5 RBI's

Good thing he got more than double the pinch hit at bats of any other Cub player this year.

Yeah, I picked up on it. I was just adding fuel to the fire.

EspnInsider is reporting that Burnett is seeking a five-year deal.

It doesn't state a dollar amount, but simply says he wants five years.

Agent Darek Braunecker told ESPN Insider Jerry Crasnick that A.J. Burnett is looking for a five-year contract. Braunecker and his partner, Mark Rodgers, plan to travel to the general managers' meetings in Indian Wells, Calif., next week to meet with prospective suitors.

Burnett went 0-4 with a 5.93 ERA in September on the way to a 12-12 finish with Florida this past season, but interest remains high in a weak market for free-agent starters. "I can tell you, 70 percent of the teams in baseball have contacted us about A.J.," Braunecker said. "It's certainly nice to be him right now."

Does the fact it will take five years to get him change interest at all?

The teams listed as interested in A.J. are the Blue Jays, Rangers, Red Sox, Orioles, and Mariners.

This is just a negotiation ploy. Remember Beltran wanting 10 yrs? There's no way he gets five years from anyone - you can bank on it.

In this weak market, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get it. Teams will have money to spend and few quality guys to spent it on. With his age and potential, he's one guy I could see getting a 5/50 deal.

True, however I honestly can't remember the last time a pitcher got more then 4 yrs. The problem is insurance companies won't insure a player for more then 3 yrs. Not to mention pitchers are notoriously injury prone, I just don't see any team taking that kind of risk.

Posted
The most he would get would be a 4 year contract, but maybe a 5th year team option. Somebody would have to be pretty desparate to offer an injury-plagued pitcher 5 years.

Now they are not drinking the coffe but making it. Dusty claims Macias makes the best of the three
