He says his mechanism for calling a batter out has never been questioned until tonight. It's funny that he used the same move the arm to the right and then fist pump for every other third strike during the game.

"There was a change of direction in the ball"

Apparently all of the replays and even zooming the play was inconclusive.

Couldn't a change of direction happened just from bouncing inside the glove? Also I really don't get it, isn't that all irrelevant since he was signaled out. I thought that superseded anything else, the fact that he was called out.

They say that he signaled that it was a strike but never signaled that he was out.

Exactly, it DOESN'T MATTER whether or not the ball hit the ground. The controversy is that Eddings called him out. Reynolds said it best that the arm raise indicated no contact, and the fist called him out. For the Angels fielders to think anything different upon seeing that is ridiculous.

In the postgame interview, Eddings said he makes the same motion for every strikeout, whether the ball hits the ground or not. This is a lie. The previous batter, Aaron Rowand, struck out on a ball that bounced. Eddings made no motion until Josh Paul tagged or threw Rowand out (don't know which happened).

Sorry, wanted to re-post to show how Eddings is wrong.

I can't take anymore of this dumb umpire's nonsense. He blew it. Admit it like a man and take your pink slip and go home.

It's worth repeating for the inevitable apologists.

He's not getting any pink slips. He'll probably get suspended to protect himself when he comes to the Southland.

On a mistake of this magnitude, he SHOULD be fired (as should many MLB umps) but the commi$$ioner'$ office doesn't have the balls to do so.

"I did not say, 'No catch,"' said Eddings, a major league umpire since 1999 who is working his third postseason assignment. "I'm watching Josh Paul, seeing what he's going to do."

This makes no sense to me. He didn't call no catch, so what in the hell do you expect Paul to do. And he is the ump, why is he letting the players dictate what happens?

In my opinion, this goes right up with, and maybe even surpasses, the Denkinger Game of 1985. This one extended the inning instead of extras which should have happened. After that crap with Pierzynski, I knew the Sox would win. Teams can recover from a lot of crap: errors, bloop hits, etc. but when an ump blows a call like that, it's murder for any team's psyche.

Pierzynski is previously known for kicking a Giants trainer in the groin. Now this. I have no respect for the man. He is a classless loser and deserves to be treated like one. I cannot wait for Friday night's Game 3 to see what the Angel fans' reaction to him will be.

This game was stolen from the Angels. Heinously. And although MLB doesn't have the guts to do so, they should reverse the call and play extra innings on Friday afternoon, then fly to Anaheim and play Game 3 Saturday night. That's a simple, correct solution. But Selig won't do it.

I don't know if I have ever been this angry with an ending to a non-Cubs baseball game. EVER.

I hope Eddings is still umpiring this series come Game 3 in Anaheim.

Has anyone checked the Sox boards. Some pretty classy stuff being said. It appears that most of their fans feel the called out is irrelevant. It was indisputable that the ball hit the ground. The Sox deserved it because they hustled on the play, and the Angels were lazy.

About the only thing I'll say to that is that Paul should have tagged him to be sure. Other than that, the whole play was bull.

True, he should have tagged him. One thing I read on their board was that Paul tossed the ball to the mound before the out call was made. Did anyone notice that? Either way, I personally did not see an angle that showed the ball hit the ground. And shouldn't that be irrelevant since he was called out? I guess this confuses me a bit. I still just don't understand why he signaled him out, then just let him take first. I think the ump was as confused as the Angels were.

Not according to the Angels or Dodgers radio stations. They said Paul saw Eddings do the fist thing to acknowledge an out and then he rolled the ball to the mound.

I just tivoed it and step played it and they really did it at the same time. Regardless, Paul saw nothing as he never looked back at Eddings. I dont believe that there was nothing verbal.

All I know for sure is:

I hate the White Sox. Even more now. But hey..if they go all the way...we were just given a gift from heaven! We can blame it on "the call." Sweet.

I won't blame the call unless the Angels lose in seven...therefore making it so they would have won the series. But I think the Halos are going to win it anyway. Scioscia is going to have his team pumped for the Anaheim games and the fans will be pumped too.

There was nothing verbal - both Eddings and Paul admitted to it.

You reckon they're gonna be pumped? Phew, if that was me it'd be Incredible Hulk time.

Normally I hate Joe Buck, but I was pleased to see him back up the Angels on that travesty of a call.

Just had a chance to watch the BBTN take. Harold Reynolds is a moron. Raising the right arm is strike, pumping the fist is out. Come on, Harold. Don't be an idiot. Admit the Angels got jobbed.
