Considering the number of national championships theyboth have had since 1980 and not since 1918, I can understand the Louisville/UK hatred. Plus, their rivalry probably would extend to football, volleyball, track, baseball, etc. I don't know if that's a fair comparison.

What does the number of titles have to do with it?

I can't see many Cubs fans feeling any connection to the Sox' run. The jersey says "Chicago," but they may as well be from another planet.

The number of titles (in basketball), to me, has a lot to do with the rivalry of those two schools. At least they both can spout off how good their teams are/ have been when bragging about it. It was just my opinion that since it's been years and years and years since either the Cubs or Sox have won a world championship I just thought after a certain amount of decades both fans would be like, "Well, I hate them but I would like to see a championship." Plus, unlike NY and LA, in Chicago you don't have multiple teams in other sports. Chicago fans are pretty much united for the other teams the other six months of the year. I was just trying to understand the hatred on both sides when both teams have had too long of a drought, but I guess you have to have lived in Chicago to fully understand, and I respect that.

I've followed otis89 over from Baseball Fever...

I have been bashing the White Sox all year because I have two obnoxious buddies who are White Sox fans and they would never let me hear the end of it if the Sox won. I'm already catching flak from them for the Cubs missing the playoffs, even though we split the six crosstown games this season.

In truth I still think the Sox were the luckiest team in baseball, having suffered only two major injuries and having their pitchers play the way they did.

And yet now the playoffs have started, I don't seem to have as much hatred for them. I still would prefer they don't win a World Series, but the fact that I don't want to see another obnoxious Red Sox celebration, another title for the soul-sucking Yankees, or a title for the ridiculously overachieving Cardinals has also jumped in. Basically, let's just get a Braves-Angels series in here so I can watch without ardently rooting against one of the teams.

If you weren't around to see the White Sox fans celebrating in bars across Chicago when the Cubs lost the NLCS in 2003, I can see how you wouldn't understand the rivalry.

Go BoSox.

Gotcha.

Yep. And then came the "Choke" T-shirts with the C being the cubs logo. And then all summer I worked with Sox fans cackling with delight over their pitchers. Thank god we split the series or I would have heard even more...

I know all about how Sox fans acted in '03 and that is why I like the class shown by the Cubs. Imagine the Sox losing and us Cub fans not rubbing it in the way they did to us. That is the ultimate revenge for their petty actions in '03.

If the White Sox do win. I will congradulate their fans and hope that (as an earlier poster mentioned) the Cubs management will have a fire lit under 'em.

Cub fans don't care about the White Sox while Sox fans are (in many cases self described) Cub haters. I like it that way. Who wants to be a hater?

I think the main problem is that many of you are friends with Sox fans. You need to start at the source of your problem and work from there...

It's hard to avoid 'em. Plus many of them are my brothers and sisters during Football, Basketball, and Hockey seasons.

Classy move by the Cubs.

Stupid move. You think the Mets or Yankees would do that for each other? Right....

So if the Mets or Yankees wouldn't do it, it's stupid?

No. It's stupid whether or not the Yankees or Mets would do it. My point is there's nothing to be gained by celebrating the success of your crosstown rival.

And you don't need to denigrate it either, just ignore it. The Sox fans and the franchise aren't deserving of the praise given how they've acted in the past. Their fans are a bunch of punks and the public voice of the franchise (Harrelson) is a classless clown not to mention completely and utterly unlistenable. I'd rather hear Al Hrabosky read Shakespeare than listen to "Hawk" call a baseball game.
