A small note in the Cards paper says that Kirk Rueter could be weighing an offer to show up for our 2006 spring training. Why do we bring these washed-up Giants losers to our camp each year?

If he's a NRI I don't see him outperforming Wood, Prior, Z, Maddux or Williams to get the job. Rueter would likely be looked at as a long reliever or AAA filler.

Besides, it could be some beat writer making a conecting between Rueter and Dusty, and thus throwing this story out there.

No problem with Ruetuer as an non roster NRI, they caught lighting in a bottle with Rusch, Worrell, Van Poppel ect recently . It doesn't hurt to have too many arms in spring training or AAA besides Ruetuer could re invente himself as a loogy in the bullpen

If he's an NRI, I have no problem with it. There's little risk there and the potential for a high reward. If he's given a major league contract, then I'd have some serious problems with the move.

What is the high reward? Wouldn't it be the major league contract, that is if he's good enough?

Vance is saying that with an NRI the only way he makes the team is that if he outperforms other players or injuries and you get the players for the next to nothing.

Glendon Rusch has a 2 million dollar option what if Kirk Rueter could replace him as the long man out pen for $250 giving thr cubs the option of dealing Rusch for Prospects?

There just have to be better NRI options than Reuter...like inviting Mel Rojas back. Reuter throws less than 85 mph, can't get lefties or righties out, had a K/9 of 2.1 (!) this year. Seriously, I don't want this guy anywhere near Dusty's "loyalty."

My bad, I misread it. Thanks.

Shortly after signing Rueter, the Cubs will trade Derrek Lee for JT Snow, sign Rich Aurilia, then get Marvin Benard for the bench.

Ah, shoot, why not bring back Stan Javier, Mark Gardner, Danny Darwin and William van Landingham while we're at it?

Hahah! Pat Sheridan, Kevin Mitchell, Brett Butler, Steve Bedrosian?

I got a kick out of seeing Maddux pitch to Biggio, it was like 1989 all over again! :)
