Would you rather do a job in which you get paid 8-10 million dollars a year or one in which you get paid 2-4 million dollars a year?

Whatever role he fills, he will get paid closer money, and therefor would not be worth it to have in any other role.

If you mean Ryan, I would pay Ryan whatever he wants for a setup role.

While stability at the end of the bullpen is certainly a plus, might not the moral of the story be that for $2M a reliable closer can be made out of a failed starter who was picked up from the scrap heap (even if he just came off Tommy John surgery?).

I am somewhat reluctant to pay "closer money" unless I'm getting a Rivera, Wagner (young version), or Gagne...

better (or more dominate) reliever doesnt mean better closer. # sometimes do not translate into effectiveness when changing roles. the mental aspect of closing far outweighs any physical differences imo. hawkins was a dominate set up man who was never able to use his abilities to effectively close games while a guy like hoffman (who now throws in the high 80's) is a dominate closer. dont forget about the fact that ryan will be changing leauges. that can sometimes a major factor in effectiveness for a pitcher.

It's this kind of thinking that caused the Alfonseca trade; look at save totals, ignore peripherals.

and your kind of thinking is what lead to using hawkins to close. he's got great stuff so he should be a great closer.

BJ Ryan has had a great year as a closer, in the AL East of all leagues, what else do you want?

What's Dempster's ERA as a closer, and his BAA? It should be pretty indicative of his ability since he rarely if ever comes in with runners on.

05/10 - 09/25 IP H R ER BB K HR PC BB/9 K/9 HR/9 WHIP ERA
Dempster 55.3 41 12 10 25 49 1 914 4.07 7.97 0.16 1.19 1.63

Those are pretty damn good numbers other than the bb/9. No BAA Fred? I don't have any need to overpay for Wagner or BJ when we can get Dempster who wants to be here for cheaper. He's proven his worth. Minus a couple Mitch Williams saves, he's made me feel very comfortable, and EVERY closer has those.

(I especially like the HR/9 stat).
