It was tough for the crowd of 37,926 to cheer in the ninth. Cubs reliever Will Ohman retired the first two batters he faced, then walked two to set up Pena's second home run off Mitre.

"In that one inning when Will came in, he got two outs and nobody on base and he walked a couple guys. You can't walk guys late," Baker said. "Sergio was in there because he throws strikes. He made a mistake. That's what happens with youth. You've got a young staff, young bullpen -- subject to walks, subject to mistakes."

No, that's what happens when you can't manage a bullpen and bring in Mitre who's pitched 1/3 inning in the last 14 days. That's Dusty trying to buy an out there in a 2-1 game and save Novoa/Wuertz for extra innings, knowing very well that he would have to PH for Mitre.

It's never Dusty, it's always the youth, the weather, the color of the opposing uniform, Steve Garvey's make-a-wish kid, the wind, the fans, and on, and on, and on.

So now I'll bet Baker will push Hendry to get some "veteran arms" for the pen in 2006.

The broadcasters, sea bass, the high grass....what a thin skinned coward.

So true.

well, the one thing we learned from last night - the Iowa Cubs can't beat the Cincinnati Reds.

That one goes on Dusty - he phoned it in from the beginning. Macias in Right? Blanco catching again? Kids pitching in a close game in the 9th? Wow, that was sickening

And no mention of Macias getting thrown out stealing ahead of Murton's homer, right? Or is that just "a veteran being aggressive, trying to help the team out?" Had it been the other way around, we would have heard a different story I'm sure

The problem isn't "kids" pitching in the ninth. The problem is the overall usage of the pen. Take a look at the two relievers in the ninth. Mitre is a sinkerball pitcher who needs regular work to be sharp or the sinker just doesn't sink. He's pitched 1/3 of an inning this entire month. Ohman, on the other hand, has pitched in 61 games this year. Not an overwhelming number, but that is a bit misleading as he didn't even start the year on the team. He was also behind Remmy on the "LOOGY" list in the first half. He's pitched in more than half the games in the second half and pitched in 6 of 7 from Aug 30th - Sept 6th. Dusty has always been a manager that rode the top guys in his pen into the ground while letting the back of the pen accumulate too much rust between outings.

And it's the wrong guys! Mitre would probably be a whole lot more effective if he were used that often. I can't really say that Ohman's worn down (IMO, he just lost his release point for a couple guys). But I find it odd for a manager who preaches that all the position players on the bench need to get regular PT to be sharp that he'll let the back end of the pen go two weeks between starts on a regular basis.

Didn't see the game, but from what I can gather from the box score Ohman came in and retired Dunn and Casey, two leftties. Then walked Keanrs and Valentin, two righties (I think Valentin is a switch hitter anyway). Ohman is a lefty specialist, so the time to bring in a new pitcher was to pitch to Kearns. Just another example of Dusty not knowing how to use the pen IMO.

I've just stopped caring now. Dusty has completely eliminated any sort of urge I once had to watch major leauge baseball. All I can say is that I can't wait for the Cubs convention so I can boo him at every single session.

Booing Dusty and Co. in the middle of winter? Save your energy and enjoy the convention...

Let him boo. Why not express your displeasure for the team's choices in a forum when you're boos can be heard? The convention isn't just about blowing sunshine up each other's rears for 3 days.

Ha, I have been to the conventions before and already have a room at the Hilton lined up. I just find it almost annoying when a dozen or so fans constantly boo the whole entire time. There are plenty of times to boo during the season...Enjoy the 3 day weekend and have some fun!

And if fun to you is blowing smoke up someone elses rear...good for you.

I'd rather have you ask some good questions instead of the fluff ones that are often asked. "Dusty...do you think Ron should be in the hall?" Get in there and quote some numbers and ask Baker to defend some of his moves and quotes.

Booing Dusty at a convention, from a distance does nothing to show why you are unhappy. If I had some random guy booing me in a place of celebration for my job, I'd think he was off his block.

Anyway, Mitre isn't a short-relief bullpen pitcher. That's the real reason he gave up the homerun last night IMO. He was still warming up.

I just wondered about the atmosphere at the Cubs Convention in another thread. I should have opened this one first.

Agreed,

However...if history has anything to say about the questions asked, it will once again be a waste of time.

Keep in mind I am not against booing of anykind. Heck, I must look odd booing at the TV at times during the season. However, there is a time and place and the Cubs Convention is not a time to be a drunken sailor screaming "Dusty Sucks" (even though most feel that way)

I look at the Cubs Convention as a good time to gear up for Baseball, after a long, cold winter I have hopes of spring and seeing the boys in blue take the field. Even if some don't like certain (or all) moves made by the Cubs staff, its hard not to get excited every spring. After all, isn't that what being a fan is all about? Hope of a championship.

Ok, sorry...I have hijacked the thread and turned it into something it didn't need to be...

Carry on!

I won't be booing all weekend. I'll only be booing when Dusty comes around. And I doubt there will only be a dozen or so people doing so for Dusty. He has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way this year.
