The Cubs won't bring back Garciaparra, going with Ronny Cedeno and Neifi Perez at shortstop or signing free agent Rafael Furcal instead.

A washed up Nomar is still a lot better than Neifi. If Neifi is our starting SS next season, I don't think I'll be watching many Cubs games, especially if Giles is the only OF we aquire to make up for the lack of production.

I doubt there is any way Neifi is the starter next year for this team, but I agree if something like that were to happen(anything is possible with this organization) I will be boycotting this team.

I, unfortunately, do not share that opinion. I could easily see the Cubs go with Neifi, at least as a primary SS option. If Dusty has Neifi available to him, he will use him far more often than is reasonable.

I think Walker is also doing his best to get shown the door. If so, you can bet, at the very least, Neifi will be at 2B or SS.

It wouldn't surprise me if Neifi was the starting SS, and Cedeno and Walker platooned at 2B.

Wow, if truly we are relying on Neifi to be our starter at any position I'm gone and I'm sure there will be others.

Sammy, yes. Nomar, no. Sammy, when healthy, sucks. Nomar, when healthy, is still an all-star caliber SS.

The problem with Nomar is that he has only been healthy 2 out of the last five years.

Ya, that was said about Alou, then he found a trainer and got in shape, same for Ken griffey Jr. who never did anything in the off season until this year. 35 hmruns late.

Nomar with his wife will be in great shape next year. It would be stupid not to sign him...mmm wait were dealing with the cubs, guess he won't be around

He was supposedly going to be in great shape with his wife this year. It would not be stupid to let him go. I don't see how anybody can justify saying it would be. Nomar has been a complete bust in a Cubs uniform. He's not reliable. If they can sign him cheaply, it makes some sense, but if he's offered money elsewhere, they would be more than justified in not signing him.

It's been well documented that Nomar has for years had a very stringent off-season fitness program. It's in spite of working out, not because of shirking workouts, that Nomar is oft-injured.

Yeah, fight the power!

You guys are so overdramatic. Hendry will get a better shortstop than Perez. The only way Neifi gets a lot of playing time is if the starter goes down.

Since when did anyone on this site care what Fox said anyway?

Wasn't any last hope of credibility killed when Buck called Derrek "Carlos" without correcting himself at the all-star game?

I thought it was when they interviewed a charectar from a beer commercial (while he was still in charectar) during the World Series.

He is looking like he is back to the same Nomar of all-star caliber. We are soooo darn patient with a pin-head like wood yet anybody else is traded or released. I do hope we can sign him cheap, but what is cheap?

2 million base salary, with an extra million for 200 plate appearances, 300, 400, and so on. Give him another million if he makes the all star game; an extra million if he hits for a certain average or higher; etc. And you know what? If he gets hurt again, then we'll have Ronny Cedeno waiting to take his place. That'd be my ideal solution for SS, at least.

You may be right. Hopefully his recent hitting will sway their opinion and we can get him back somewhere... for the right price

It was Leon from the Bud commercials.

I agree with Nomar at a reduced rate, but I'm doubtful we'll get him for that. Surely there are other teams willing to roll the dice on him, right?

If we DO sign him, then I'm not sure if I want Walker back. I know he's a great hitter and all, but watching him and Nomar try to turn two is painful. On the other hand, letting Walker go hurts our already struggling offense. Still, I'm inclined to let Cedeno start at 2B and hope we can fill our offensive needs by completely restructuring the OF.

I know it was Leon, I was making a parody of him by speaking in the first person.

With $40MM to spend and his job on the line in 2006, Jim Hendry isn't dumb enough to rely on Colorado and San Francisco castoff Neifi Perez as his starting SS. He will (over)pay to get Rafael Furcal, and that is a good thing IMO. A nice leadoff hitter with speed and defense, a gun for an arm, can even turn on a ball occasionally. A much better option than Nomar:

Furcal 2005 thru 9/8:

Age: 27 (just turned two weeks ago)

BA: .280

HR: 11

RBI: 51

SB: 39/46

Triples: 10

Hits: 149

K/BB: 68/53

OBP: .344

OPS: .769

Fielding pct: .982 (12 errors, 677 chances, 108 DP's)

Furcal has been the leadoff hitter all year for Atlanta, and his numbers are exactly on track with his career performance, especially over the last 3 years since he became an everyday player. So it stands to reason that if healthy, this kind of performance could be expected over the course of his new contract as he hits the prime of his career.

I want him. Move Cedeno over to 2B in winter ball (as is the plan), keep Hairston and Neifi FOR THE BENCH, and as backup in case Cedeno or Furcal falter or get hurt.

Furcal will make roughly Nomar money. Dumping Walker for Cedeno frees up another $2.5MM to go back in the pot for the outfield and pitching staff. Brian Giles is a necessity, as is one of BJ Ryan or Billy Wagner. Either trade for a CF or go ahead and sign Damon, and this team's problems (other than the manager and coaching staff) would largely be solved.
