I'm surprized there hasn't been much mentioned about trading Burnitz. I would think that a team that needs an OF or a left-handed power hitter off the bench wouldn't consider him. He is the kind of hitter who could get hot for a month.

But how would Dusty be able to have a "veteran presence" at each OF position if they traded Burnitz? You can't play all rookies, all the time. That's disrespecting the game, man. After all, it's absolutely un-possible that any rookie could replace Burnitz' .269/.331/.463/.794.

It's possible that the Cubs could be thinking of either:

1) picking up his option

2) declining the option, but offering arbitration

He does play the best RF ever according to Sutcliffe.

Burnitz has to be used right to be effective and Baker well.....

I think Brenly said he played the best right field in Wrigley he's seen in years. But the guy before Burnie.......oh well forget it.

Apparently Brenly never saw Dawson play at Wrigley

From a defensive standpoint, I think Burnitz has done a pretty good job. He's managed to track down balls I didn't think he'd get to. And he has this strange habit of actually hitting the cut-off man just about every time.

I like his defense too. If the Cubs had a Manny Ramirez type player in LF and Baker used Burnitz right...it could have worked.

Man. I'd swear it was Sutcliffe that talked about Burnys D.

Sutcliffe did talk about Burnitz's D in RF. He said it was the best he's seen in Wrigley other than Dawson.

Bob may have said something too, but i definitely heard Sut say that. You're not going crazy.

Burnitz played passably OK, his defense was better than expected and his run production will be about as expected. His BA is exactly as expected. The biggest disappointment with him is that he seemed to catch "Cubs disease" over here, with his BB rate down dramatically. As a result, his OBP is nearly 40 points below his career avg, and his OPS is nearly 100 points below where we needed it.

JB was a stopgap, emergency pickup since the Cubs didn't move Sosa until the last minute, he was all that was left on the market. But there is no way, no how he returns for 2006. As a result, yes--I'd move him today (8/31) to a contender and see what prospect(s) you could get for him. Something is better than nothing.

I really appreciate his hustle and his attitude. Tracking down balls in the OF, hitting his cutoff man, hustling down the line on ground balls, and not blaming everyone else when things aren't going well are examples of what he has brought to this team.

And yet, overall, his presence in the middle of the order on a daily basis has been a disaster, and they absolutely must replace him in the offseason.

Agreed.

I surely am not advocating bringing Burnitz back ( I want him replaced), but where do you get those numbers? He has an OBP of .331 right now, and .349 for a career average.

I'd take Burnitz as the Cubs rightfielder next year if Dusty batted him 6th or 7th and we could get him for 4-5 mil. As a middle of the order hitter at $7 mil I'd definitely pass. Of course if Burnitz bats 6th, the Cubs will need to find another middle of the order guy (Giles anyone). Doesn't leave much room for a youth movement, but with Dusty as the manager, maybe a youth movement is just a dream.

I'd rather cough up a little bit more for Jacque Jones or, if possible, trade for Austin Kearns.

We got a decent season from Burnitz - let's not try to go to that well once too often.

OMG, I rather not see Burnitz here next year. He was OK for us but an upgrade is necessary. Here we go again...

The Cubs needed Burnitz on this team this winter, if not what would we possible talk about??? All other positions are just set and with fantastic #4/5 men like Rush and Williams most of us Cubs fans can have a nice relaxing time during winter meeting.
