If needed, give Giles a 4th year. (Yes, highly unlikely the Cubs do this).. Giles is exactly what the Cubs offense needs. .400 obp guy w/ some pop and he bats left-handed.

Some people are calling for Giles to get 10 mill or more per year and 3-4 years.

If the Cubs sign the soon-to-be 35 Brian Giles and stick him in right, bring back Corey to play CF and have Murton in LF, who is going to lead off? Furcal? Are you willing to pay the huge amount of money it is going to take to sign both Giles and Furcal when over the last 3 full seasons, Furcal's OBP in the lead-off spot is just .340?

Why not spend a lot less to sign Damon and Nomar? Damon is 3 years younger than Giles, and can lead-off. Yes, Damon's OPS pales next to Giles's, but Furcal's OPS pales next to Nomar's.

Signing Giles is great. He is just what the Cubs offense needs, but he is not a lead-off hitter. So if you sign Giles, you almost have to sign Furcal or deal Corey for a lead-off guy or sign Lawton to play LF and lead-off, but that means sitting Murton. Also, if you sign Furcal, it blocks Cedeno. But signing Nomar to an incentive-laden one year deal with a low base salary does not.

The younger and lead-off capable Damon will likely command what you are willing to pay Giles. So why not kill two birds with one stone, save some money and years by signing Nomar instead of Furcal and leave the door open for Cedeno in the process?

Of course, I would have no problem signing both Giles and Damon, but we'd be lucky to get one of them let alone both.

But just to dream for a second...

Damon leads off. Nomar bats second. Then Giles, Lee, Ramirez, Walker, Barrett and Murton.

Trade Corey if/when he starts tearing up AAA. In '07, rotate in Cedeno for Nomar. If Pie is ready, trade either Giles or Damon and eat some of the salary or, if Murton is less than great, move Damon to left and start Pie in center. Pie and Cedeno's league minimum contracts allow for the expense of Giles and Damon in the same outfield. In '08, maybe EPatt is ready to man 2B.

Kinda makes you go hmmmm, doesn't it?

Lead off with Walker, hit Murton second, then whatever order after that. If Murton flops hitting #2, put Giles and his .422 OBP there.

The Cubs aren't going to outbid Boston or NY for Damon. Time to move on already...

Furcal's obp is 12 points lower than Walker's btw.

The combination of Giles' eye and the propensity of pitchers to work around him is why Giles leads the major leagues with 96 walks. On the flip side, he has struck out only once in every 10 at-bats – the 10th-best mark in the National League.

While this quote is nice to think about for production in the Cub's lineup, everything in the article confirms what I have thought all along, that Giles will remain a Padre.

I think the Cards will make a push for Giles. With Walker gone after this year, they're gonna make a splash with the new stadium. This move fits that perfectly.

He'll probably sign in StL, find the fountain of youth and have 3 consecutive career years.

You've nailed it, beyond a doubt, he'd be fantastic for the Cardinals, everything the breath on, touch or remotely think about turns to Gold.

I really don't see Giles as a legitimate option b/c of his obsession with the west coast- i would explore a trade with Minny-they will want more pop and have some pieces that are getting a bit expensive:

Minny needs: 2B(offensive) to move Jacque Jones, and probably Shannon Stewart and maybe JC Romero-is there a package we could put together that could help get these guys? Maybe a Cpatt+Hairston+Barrett+Van Buren for Stewart+Jones? just thinking out loud-no need to flame.

Minny could be a good trading partner in the offseason-Radke is owed alot of money as well-

Maybe a 3-way involving Texas?

Minny=Soriano+Cpatt+Welly+Dellucci

Texas=Radke+Rusch+Walker

Cubs =Stewart+Romero+Jones

Minny's payroll drops 6M but they don't really lose anything-they could alocate that 6M to a starter

Texas's payroll stays about the same but pick up 2 starters and a 2nd baseman-I hate to lose Walker but you have to give to get-

Cubs payroll rises 6.5M but we pick up 2 starting OF and a lefty who is dominate for the bullpen-

Re-sign Nomar-and.........*nauseus* Neifi-call up Cedeno as a backup IF- Let Hairston and Neifi platoon at 2B-or play some LF/CF-(Hairston)

Sign BJ Ryan-Timlin-Millwood and lets go

RF-Stewart(7M)

CF-Jones(6M)

1B-Lee(8M)

3B-Rammy(10M)

SS-Nomar(5M)

LF-Murton(.3k)

C-Barrett(4M)

2B-Perez(2M)

Prior(5)-Zambrano(5)-Maddux(9)-Wood(12)-Millwood(7)

BJ Ryan(5)Dempster(3)Romero(3M)Ohman(.3k)Wuertz(.4k)-Novoa(.3k)-Van Buren/Guzman(.3k)

Hairston(2.5M)-Blanco(1.5M)-Grieve(.4k)-Cedeno(.3k)Branyon(2M)-Macias-(1M)

100M payroll-I don't like Jones but Stewart has always been a solid leadoff guy- that is pretty solid team-

That doesn't make sense to me. Why get Jones & Stewart, who each have OBP around .333 and have OPS of about .780 and .730, for $13M, and then play Neifi & JHJr at 2B when we could exercise two options and at the very least have Walker (.351 OBP, .824 OPS, 2.5M) and Burny (.330 OBP, .790 OPS, 7M), with Hairston back out in CF? Walker would be just as good at leading off as Stewart and we wouldn't have to start or platoon the .300 OBP, < .700 OPS that is Neifi Perez.

I'm not advocating these moves, btw, I'm just saying that the deal proposed doesn't make the team any better. And since Jones costs more than Walker, we're essentially paying $3.5M (not to mention CPatt, Rusch, and Welly) to lose 15 to 20 points of OBP and add JC Romero (and his $3M contract). Is there something I'm missing?
