If I had said that Sammy Sosa was going to be an Oriole late last August, I would have been laughed off the forum. It wasn't until Sammy left early that the door was opened. So maybe Dusty will be out yet. Have faith that a lot can change in a month. It may be misguided, but I know I'm crossing my fingers...

Leyland is also known as a pitcher abuser, look at what he did to Livan Hernandez in '97.

From Rany (Chicago native) over at BP:

Almost one full year ago--June of 1998, to be exact--I had become increasingly frustrated at Jim Leyland's idea of "entertainment" in what was turning into The Lost Season in south Florida. My frustration stemmed from watching as his young and promising pitchers were made to throw close to a gross of pitches on an all-too-frequent basis. I watched with dismay as Livan Hernandez twice reached the 150-pitch barrier, but when rookie Jesus Sanchez labored for 147 pitches one fine evening--accompanied by deafening silence from traditional media sources--my disappointment turned to rage and inaction no longer seemed an option. I had to do something.

Yeah, but the orgainzation had an axe to grind with Sammy and was just looking for a reason to ditch him. They seem to want to throw Dusty a parade for the 'bang-up' job that they think he's doing here.

Unfortunately, Dusty isn't going anywhere.

FWIW, Livan Hernandez's durability is greater than just about anyone in the game today. Some of his high pitch counts this year include: 123, 125, 127, 130, 131, 136, 145, 150.

He was different pitcher back in '97 than he is in '03, he could hit mid 90s on his FB and lost his velocity during the '98 season.

After seeing Sanchez on there, I don't this was exclusive to Hernandez.
