Is Baker TRYING to hurt as many people as possible? Why not have Prior catch and put Zambrano in center?

 

Who does this hurt? Putting a SS at 3B is hardly a stretch.

 

It probably hurts the people sitting behind the first base dugout, as Nomar's throws are going to be 10 feet wider of the bag than usual

I'm guessing Baker is thinking that playing 3B puts less strain on Nomar than playing SS. Plus this has the added effect of allowing Neifi to play SS while keeping Cedeno's butt firmly nailed to the bench.

The Score update just said that the Cedeno was called up and will start at SS and Perez will play 2B today. Nomar apparently went to Baker and suggested that he play 3B. Nomar took grounders there this morning. Also Lawton is batting 2nd today. Hairston will be leading off, and I assume playing center.

And another bizarre Cubs season, just got more bizarre....

 

I really don't think there's anything odd about this at all. I mean, other than Dusty's fascination with getting Neifi into the lineup whenever possible, it seems to makes sense to me.

OK this is uber-bizarre. So the lineup is possibly:

 

Hairston, CF

Lawton, LF

Lee, 1B

Burnitz, RF

Nomar, 3B

Barrett, C

Perez, 2B

Cedeno, SS

 

Or maybe

 

Hairston

Lawton

Nomar

Lee

Burnitz

Barrett

Perez

Cedeno

We'll see how it works out. I was hoping Macias would be playing CF today so that Baker would somehow have all 4 of his SS in the lineup at once (think our bench is a little unbalanced?)

Actually, one of the positions Macias doesn't play is SS. He hasn't played there at all as a Cub, and has only about 40 innings logged there in his career.

 

Considering how much value they seem to place on his versatility, this seems to be a knock against that value. A guy who is supposed to be able to play all these positions should be able to play short. It's not hard to find backup OF. They have plenty of 2B depth. So really his only "value" is his ability to backup 3B, but any middle infield utility player should be able to do the same job, and the Cubs have a couple minor leaguers that can handle that backup duty.
