CBSsportsline's Rumor Mill mentions that Eddie Guardado has cleared waivers. I don't know the terms of his contract, but it might be time for Hendry to claim him and work out a deal. Guardado instantly improves our bullpen for the rest of this year and the future.

Technically speaking, if he's cleared waivers, Hendry can't just claim him per se. If he's cleared waivers, all 29 other teams have a shot at making a deal with the Mariners. He's got 2 player options - $4M in '05 and $4.25M in '06, so any club getting him is on the hook for $8.25M minus whatever a team can get Seattle to pick up. If I'm Seattle, I don't pick up any cash unless I get a stud prospect in return.

What trade idea do you have in mind?

I know we have a lot of Rule 5 bubble guys...Do you think Seattle would take bulk over 1 stud prospect?

If Seattle won't take bulk then pass. No way is Guardado worth even a semi-stud prospect, though I'd take him.

The reason that he would be worth a top prospect is his contract. In order to get Seattle to eat some salary

I would liek to have Guardado but hes getting older and I wouldn't give up a good prospect for him. I would do it for a decent one though.

I would certainly give up a good prospect for him. He will be 35 years old in October and he has 29 saves, 1.29 ERA, .88 WHIP, and .185 BAA and makes about $4 million a year. Also, he strikes me as one of those pitchers that will be around until he is 40-41 years old (maybe not as efficient though). He would be a great addition to the bullpen because of his experience as a closer. Dempster has been great, but he scares the daylights out of me everytime he comes in. Resign Dempster and you have a lefty and a righty with experience as a closer. Sign Wagner and Guardado becomes trade bait or a set-up man. If a deal could be worked out, this is a no-brainer.

Remind me again...what were Remlinger's stats like in his age 35 season in Atlanta before we signed him?

Yah, I would be careful when considering going after any closer at that age, especially when he makes that kind of money. The only closer I would have any real interest in this offseason is Ryan. Guardado can often make the 9th inning just as interesting as Dempster anyway. Cubs should just look into adding depth to the pen by acquiring a couple good SU guys instead.

It might be best to buy low. Go after guys who aren't currently having great years. Maybe Uggy Urbina? Felix Rodriguez? I also expect Hendry to sign Dotel, although he won't help much next season. Bullpens are always a crapshoot, and there's no sense in overpaying. Most of the money this offseason should be spent on offense or another starting pitcher.

I think this pen would be pretty good:

dempster

williamson

urbina

rodriguez

ohman

With Wood performing well in the pen, I don't see that as a major concern for this season. And while Eddie isn't making a ton of money over the next two seasons, after being burned with Remlinger I'd be cautious.

A starting pitcher would help us more than anything....or maybe an outfielder who can actually hit. (We had one of those, but they sent him to AAA.)

That's a bad idea. The worst thing you can do is to acquire relievers who made their reputations 4-5 years ago. Felix Rodriguez hasn't been effective for a long time. Urbina is still somewhat effective, but might soon be a liability. For example, Guillermo Mota still has a reputation as a "proven verteran" closer, and Paul DePodesta got lambasted for trading him. But over the past 2 years, he's been a punching bag. We have barely heard of some of the guys having great years this year. By the time we notice them, they'll have about 1 more year before they get expensive and overrated, a la, Remlinger and Hawkins.

Both of those guys were the consensus best set up men in the game when Hendry acquired them, and look what happened. The idea is to find the guys that can get people out that haven't been given a chance yet. Guys like Brendan Donnelley, Mike Gonzalez, Brian Fuentes, et al. about 3 years ago.

i love eddie. before dempster he would have been a huge pick up. i think a move like this depends a greal deal on where they feel keery will fit next year. if he is bullpen headed then how can we pay 2 set up guys 16 mil...if one is closing then it's still costly and that means we probably let dempster go. dempster will also be due a huge increase. if we had eddie as our lefty and dempster as the main closer, i am guessing he woulf want just as much as eddie gets...

if we could spend the money...wouldn't that be a heck of a way to finish a game! eddie-wood-dempster...or some combp of that! lot's of 6 inning games! we could dream
