Ron Potesta made this post in the 8/9 game thread:

I have NO idea where they got the idea that Pie was ready to play.. he's not even close to playing last I heard..

Looks like the Trib was...brace yourself...wrong.

What was the exact description of his injury? My perception was that it was a sprained ankle, but I'm guessing there was some damage done to tendons and/ or ligaments. Can anyone advise what progress he has made thus far? I'm sure they are still trying to strengthen the ankle at this point, but it would be very nice if we were given a bit more info so this wasn't such a guessing game.

Felix sprained his ankle and then developed a bone bruise during his rehab work. He might not play another game in the regular season. Hopefully, he comes back in time for the post-season run...

Justin Sharpe was just interviewed on WDXI. When asked about Felix, he said he was 'making progress', but didn't talk about (nor was he asked about) a timeframe for his return.

Why do certain members of the media have such a hard time differentiating between "target dates" and what's actually expected to happen?

Paul Sullivan"]The mysterious status of top prospect Felix Pie was addressed Monday by Cubs director of player development Oneiri Fleita, who denied Pie's injury was a stress fracture in his right foot.

"They say it's a bone bruise," he said. "We're hoping he spends the last 7-10 days in Double A and gets some time before the playoffs."

....................

Fleita said Pie is scheduled to begin playing again at Double-A West Tenn on Saturday in a home game against Chattanooga. This is the second unofficial target date for Pie's return. He was first due to come back on Aug. 9 before inflammation in the ankle reportedly set him back.

"Do I have to give another target date?" Fleita asked facetiously.

Pie may be able to play in the final 10 regular-season games and in the Southern League playoffs, though that may not be enough at-bats for him to merit an end-of-the-season call-up to the Cubs.

Gotta tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.. It seems the Tribune AND the Sun-Tiimes are now reporting a Saturday comeback for Felix.. I'll be shocked if he is in Jackson before the end of the regular season let alone Saturday. It's like I said last night on the broadcast, this is the team we are going to go to battle with in the post-season. If Pie comes back, its icing on the cake..I'm not going to count on it though.

Sullivan is now saying that he's done for the season:

Trib"]Hendry said Saturday that the "only viable" leadoff man in the system is center fielder Felix Pie, who will wind up missing the final 21/2 months with Double-A West Tenn with a severe ankle injury. Pie will play winter ball in the Dominican Republic and is expected to compete for a roster spot next spring, but the Cubs can't count on him being the leadoff man.

I have bolded two things. Guess which one upsets me (note that neither is surprising, including the point that he's going to end up missing more than 10 weeks).

There usually is a big difference between being allowed to compete for a roster spot and being handed the starting CF job. And I sure hope that is Sullivan's opinion that Pie is a "viable" lead-off hitter. Speed, yes, proven ability to get on base at the major league level, not so much.

Not to mention that he is now no longer even the most viable leadoff man on the Jaxx roster, with Patterson having been promoted.
