I'm not sure if there is a thread out there that puts all these in one spot...

Since we all agree Dusty needs to go...Who is the best guy to replace them.....why do you want them...

I think I'd like Girardi, I'd be happy with Leland...heck, Sutcliffe, Stone, or even Mark Grace might be interesting choices....thoughts.

I suggest Hendry seriously consider Booby Valentine or Davey Johnson. Both have shown that they will play youngsters and both have familiarity with the newer SABR oriented thinking that we will never see the likes of Macias and Hollandswrht start regularly.

That or someone from the Braves organization.

Davey Johnson.

Anyone know when or for whom Davey Johnson last managed?

I always remember him during his time with the Mets.

Here's my list of best candidates:

1. Fredi Gonzalez- I've expounded on my reasons in other threads. He has the right pedigree and he's paid his dues. He's still young enough to grow into the job. He'd be an excellent choice.

2. Davey Johnson- He's a winner. He may rub some folks the wrong way, but I think he'd do an excellent job.

3. Larry Dierker- He consistently took a team with less talent than the current Cubs and put them in the playoffs year after year.

Other candidates include: Girardi, Ned Yost (if we could lure him out of Milwaukee), Pat Corrales, Jim Leyland, Buck Martinez, and Bob Brenly.

Dodgers, 2000...

Before that, he was with the Orioles, back when they were pretty good in the mid-90's... (Alomar spitting incident, Jeffrey Maier)

Davey Johnson's managerial record.

His last stint was with the LA Dodgers in 2000.

In 14 seasons as a manager, Johnson has had only three seasons below .500. (1990- his last year with the Mets, 1993- his first year with the Reds, and 1999 his first year with the Dodgers.)

He's had four seasons with a winning percentage over 600, and then another at 590. He has a winning record for all four organizations he has managed. He would be an excellent choice.

Wow. I'm convinced. Does Davey need to be coaxed out of retirement like Jack Mckeon was last year? Looks like he could be the kinda manager who could provide continuity for this team.

It probably would take some coaxing to get Johnson to come out of retirement since he has been retired for a few years and has a relaxing job in his home town teaching college students and helping to run their athletic program. Plus, I always wonder why another team would fire him with that kind of success. Just seems to me we would be setting our selves up for another Baker like scenario where he wins someplace else and we only later understand why they fired him.

In any event, I like Fredi Gonzalez and Joe Girardi. Two youthful coaches that have learned from some of the best (Bobby Cox and Joe Torre).

How about the "Schwab"? He may not know fundamentals, but he WILL know the names and past history of everybody on the team! Edited by Tim Burr

Jimmy Leyland - He's won at both Florida and Pittsburgh with much smaller relative payrolls than the Cubs. Showed in post-season with both teams that he can handle pressure and the media spot light. His teams played good fundamental baseball. Man of principal who retired because team owner wasn't committed to maintaining a winning team.

What's not to like?

I didn't know much about Fredi Gonzalez and googled him (A9'd him, actually...come on 1.57%!).

The third hit was from a recent Marlins forum post asking the same question:

Seems the fish fans want Girardi or Piniella. One post says Girardi & Gonzalez can't be contacted (though the Marlins fans were talking in-season, seems to me.)

I think that thread was referring to rumors that McKeon could be canned in season. If that was the case, I could see why the Yankees and Braves would deny others the permission to talk to Girardi and Gonzalez. Losing a coach in the midst of a penant race could be disruptive.

On the other hand, I'm sure once the playoffs are completed both would be allowed to interview for managerial vacancies.
