"Wood is likely to be shut down by September if management believes the Cubs have little or no chance to overcome the sizable deficit they face."

the sooner he gets the shoulder surgery behind him, the better.

What happened to "he can't do any more damage to it"? He shouldn't be in the pen at all if this is the case. It's not worth jeopardizing the long term investment just to get some relief innings that may or may not be good out of him.

The few times I've heard Wood comment directly on this, he's seemed a lot more iffy on the surgery than everyone else is. The Trib makes it sound like a sure thing, though (as have other sources I've read).

Well at least we'll know when they've officially thrown in the towel.

Should we start an over/under on when he gets shut down?

If the Cubs were going to shut Wood down the day they realized they had no chance, he should've been shut down two days after opening day.

Get the surgery now, come back next year and show everyone you still have nasty stuff.

With his injury, it's more about the pain than causing any more damage.

Shut him down now - we have little to no chance of making the playoffs now.

Does anybody know of another pitcher who's had this 'clean-up' type of surgery before? I would imagine the recovery/rehab is relatively straight forward and would love to see a healthy Wood completely ready for 2006.

Matt Morris had the procedure done I believe. Wade Miller as well if memory serves.

Wade Miller actually didn't have the surgery done. They decided that it could heal on it's own. Maybe he should have had it done though.

2004 Season

It was an extremely frustrating season for Wade Miller, who was expected to be one of a quartet of strong starters for the team. He made 15 starts and had a 7-7 record with a 3.35 ERA before going on the disabled list June 26 with a shoulder problem that was later described as a frayed labrum. Surgery was ruled out at the time, and he rehabbed it extensively but could never return last season.

Wood should have the procedure done immediately. There's no point wasting him in the bullpen when this season is pretty much a wash anyways. Have the surgery now instead of November so he has that much more time to heal and be ready for Spring training next year.

It's not so much about the risk or discomfort that continuing would entail.

The main reason is that he'd get a head start on rehab for next year and be that much further ahead come spring training. Since he's missed a lot of time this year, an above-average offseason workload might not hurt him towards the end of next season. (Although obviously we wouldn't want him to push it too hard).

Edit: Wood and the team doctor have been careful to say words like "maybe" and "perhaps" each time. Maybe it's just 'cause this is my pet peeve, but those words have meaning.

It's ridiculous to play Wood from the bullpen if he's hurt. Not only can he not hope to be as effective as he should be, but he's not a reliever, and putting him in those situations cannot help him or the team.

This team is done, and not realizing it could seriously cost Wood.
