Actually, with Nomar's limited range and lack of alternatives in the Cubs system, having Nomar at 2B makes a lot of sense. If Nomar and Mia have built a home in the Chicago metro area, he might be willing to make the transition.

Nomar said they haven't bought a home in the Chicago area

I would only take Nomar back for another 1-year deal, this time for 1/2 as much. If we signed him for $8 million to prove he was healthy and he missed 1/2 the season, I would say "you weren't healthy, you weren't worth the investment, so now you have to take a pay cut. We like you, but we have to cut our losses." The if he regains All Star level, you sign him to an extension.

I can't see anyone offering Nomar more than a $4 million contract for 1 year. Of course, if he hit .350 for the remainder of this season it might be a different story (but it ain't gonna happen).

Nomar will be playing in LA next year, for either the Dodgers or Angels. I'd almost be willing to put money on it.
I agree. Cabrera has been a bust for the Angels. Anyway, if the Cubs have a young kid who they think is ready and don't have to shell out the money for Nomar, why would they?

It also should be pointed out that Hendry had his chance to take a look at Cedeno at short and blew it. Ronny will get even less playing time now that Nomar is back. I don't see how Cedeno could be anything more than a backup plan (in which money would be spent on the outfield) for next year.

Hendry can't be held responsible for how Dusty played Cedeno. It was Dusty who blew Jim's chance to take a look at Cedeno at short.

No offense to the HOF'er, but he totally messed up a report earlier this season on Pie.

how?

didn't he just say he was close to being recalled? because he was - had he not been on the DL, he would have been recalled with murton.

According to one of our NSBB Correspondents there was absolutely no truth to that whatsoever. Maybe there's since been a quote saying that he was going to get the call, but people in the Jaxx organization said that wasn't an option.

I'm pretty sure Hendry himself said that Pie would've been up or something to that effect.

I've heard Hendry specifically say that Pie would of have been up if it wasn't for his injury. Once on WGN, and the other time on the score so it's no joke he would've been up.

If Hendry wasn't on board with Dusty's managing decisions, he would have done something. And he certainly wouldn't have called up Cedeno a second time to let him waste away on the bench. Any number of guys could have done what Cedeno has done with the big league club, but Hendry chose Ronny knowing full well what was going to happen.

Says in an Insider article that JH wants them at CF and SS in 2006.

This is good news, and may also indicate that Mr. Baker's time is short.

I'm glad to hear that Baker's time may be short with the Cubs. Personally, I'd like to see Joe Girardi captain the team. But I really do not want Pie to be in the major leagues starting next year. He has too many issues that need improvement for him to have to work on them while trying to perform well for a team that has a shot to make the playoffs.

Pie needs to show better plate discipline before being brought up.

I'm very much intrigued by Girardi as a possible candidate for manager. If I'm not mistaken, he grew up a Cubs fan so he would probably at least listen to an offer. I know the Marlins really want him and the Yankees are grooming him to succeed Torre as well. My question is twofold: would you take a gamble on a manager without a track record for next season? If so, would Girardi let the rookies play?

Wow! I will definitely take this bet. LAA has Cabrera for 4 years and even if he continues to suck this bad next season they also have Aybar and Brandon Wood waiting in the wings. Signing Nomar just wouldn't make ANY sense. Not to mention they also have Macier Izturis who actually hasn't been half bad. One of the few bright spots this year (and last) in LAD town is Caesar Izturis. To dump him for a guy who has been injured that last 2 years and is in decline would not make any sense. Besides Caesar is still cheap and this matters to the ownership (McCourts are tettering close to Clipper-land) and won't be overly expensive until 2007. Then they would sign Nomar.

I, for one, DO NOT want to see Girardi as captain. Nothing against the guy, i like him, but he is in all likelyhood another players' manager. This team does not need a players' manager. 2003, yes, that team was a good fit for players' manager with Alou, Sammy, etc, but not this years.

If Pie plays well during spring training, hell be up. I am almost certain of that.

this is true, I guess

Actually, he's having a house built. It's in Winnetka.

I have no idea why he's having a house built that won't be completed before the end of the season

Why even bother calling young players up or keeping them on the roster in 2006? If Baker is still there they will just rot and once again he'll just play his flunkee's. I just do not understand why Hendry doesn't see this unless the Trib gets upset with him for hiring Baker in the first place. It's amazing on how one very bad move could have such an effect on this team. If Hendry doesn't have the guts to make this move (can Baker)...or the baseball knowledge then he should be gone just as well.

I hope that the Dodger GM likes Baker and is willing to take him off the Cubs hands.

Depodesta is a Beane disciple. I can't envision any scenario where he'd hire a vet-loving, walk-hating manager like Baker.

I can't either but I'm hoping a "Homecoming Thing" will enter Depodestas brain and he'll do it because the home folks want him back where he belongs.
