I would be for it. Offensively Hernandez is better than Barrett, but he's better defensively. I'd bet we could spin Barrett off to the Mets or something.

I don't know about Hernandez. He's a similar offensive player, but I can't see us getting rid of Barrett's long term deal just to get someone who is a marginal upgrade. That said, I think Barrett can become better as a defensive catcher, due to him not catching throughout his professional career. IIRC Hernandez has had some injury troubles as well.

Anyway, when were things going well defensively with Barrett? I suppose he was making improvements with throwing runners out, but he's still below average, defensively. I'm not too upset with his mental ... gaffe the other day. I'm more frustrated with his game-calling, catching ability and his positioning on throws to the plate. You know, basic fundamental stuff.

not to try and attempt to re-hijack the thread but after spending this season near San Diego and hearing Hernandez all season, he is DEFINATELY another Diva. This guy was just quoted in the paper saying that he had to have surgery on his hand now rather then in the offseason (like reccomended) so that he could get a better FA contract. Nothing like giving up on a 1st place team and a run at the playoffs in order for you to secure a better FA contract. This guys is a joke and has lost all the respect of his teammates. He is a whiner and and all "me" person.

I think that they are banking on the fact that large market teams are is desparate need of a catcher (LA,NY) and will overpay. It wouldn't suprise me to see a 4/32.

There is a rumor here in NY that Brian Schneider is interested in reuniting with Omar Menia. I don't know what his contract status looks like though.
