That didn't sound good. Ron was just talking about Pie bobblehead night (which is also NSBB broadcast night) and said that the way things are going it may be the only time you see him. Not good...

i hate the Cubs management...a sprained ankle, a 2 week injury, turns into a potential season ending injury..

To put a positive spin on it. Pie getting injured COULD turn out actually to be a good thing. With reports from as high up as Jim Hendry saying that Pie was going to be called up with Murton if he wasn't injured. This will keep him from being rushed (for the time being).

Plus, there's nothing structurally wrong with him, he just has a deep bone bruise that takes time to heal. He takes more time for it to heal now, but then it shouldn't be anything that bothers him again.

Shipman gets 3 up and 3 down yesterday for the save with 2 K's. Tonight he gets another save, giving up 1 hit.

Another reminder that we plan on locking the Q & A threads for the Jaxx later tonight.

In regards to Q & A threads, Nathan told me earlier that the Q & A sessions with Eric Patterson and Sean Gallagher have been completed! He's been really busy with Nomar and Kerry in town but will forward them to be posted once he has a chance!

Montanez continues to hit at AA, 2 for 3 with a walk. Anyone know how good he'd be defensively in CF?

EDIT: His AA line us up to .324/.367/.500/.867 in 79 AA Plate Appearances.

Mr. Pinto gets out of a couple of big jams tonight and drops his ERA to 2.15

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought he entered the game with a 2.14 ERA.

CUBS QUIETED BY THRESHER ATTACK IN 7-2 LOSS

Clearwater Snapped Daytona’s Four-Game Winning Streak And Avoided The Sweep

By Bo Fulginiti

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla—Friday night’s series finale between Clearwater and Daytona began as a showcase of two crafty young southpaws engaging in a pitchers duel.

That was of course until the top half of the sixth inning.

In the thick of a 2-2 tie, the Threshers erupted for four runs on four hits capped off by a two-RBI bases loaded single from shortstop Omar Bramasco, as Clearwater avoided the series sweep and downed Daytona by a final of 7-2.

Cubs starter J.R. Mathes (8-6) was solid but not spectacular in his 19th start of the season, as the dependable lefty gave up five earned runs on eight hits in six full innings of work to take the loss.

Threshers first baseman Bryan Hanson fueled the fire for Clearwater at the plate, as he went 2-for-5 including a solo homerun in the seventh frame that sealed the deal.

Clearwater starter Keith Ramsey (2-3) pitched 5.1 innings and gave up just two earned runs on five hits while he struck out six to record the win.

A bright spot at the plate for Daytona was catcher Jake Fox, who went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in a losing effort.

With the loss the Cubs had their four-game winning streak snapped as the fell to 17-23 on the second half, as Clearwater improved to 15-25 before heading back to Bright House Networks Field for another home stand.

Daytona will now prepare to finish up the final three games of the current home stand, as they usher in the last place Jupiter Hammerheads for a short series beginning on Saturday night.

The Cubs will send All-Star righty Handy Wells (6-2, 3.48 ERA) to the hill to make his sixth start of the season.

First pitch of Game 1 is set for 7:05 p.m. EST, with a special fireworks show scheduled after the final pitch.

I'll be at the Cougars game tonight with the inlaws.

I was there, too. Harvey's power is impressive, as was the rope he threw to 2nd base from the RF corner on that leadoff double in the 9th.

He has an incredible arm. I've seen him make precision throws to 3B and HP. It's cool to see him fire the ball back into the infield. Has he ever pitched before?

Boise Report

It is getting depressing. I would like to write up a report on a win, but Boise looks like they will be swept in the 5 game series with SK.

The Good -

Not much to report here. SK's pitcher (Romo), dominated Boise.

1) Mark Reed - 2-4 (both singles) Mark has to be the best bunter I have ever seen in the NWL. He seems to be able to lay down a perfect bunt at will. Today's died on the third base line just inches from the foul line. His other single was sharply hit up the middle.

2) Mitch Atkins - Pitched 5 decent innings. He got himself into trouble in the 3rd. Two walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch allowed two runs to score on just one hit. Considering that SK's team is batting over .300 and their ninth place hitter is hitting around .410 for the season, not a terrible performance.

3) Chris Gaskin - 1-4(single). What impressed me tonight was his hustle and defense. Almost killed himself chasing a foul ball and running into the dugout. Started a very nice double play.

The bad -

1) Davy Gregg finally slapped the ball on the ground and managed to beat out an infield single. He keeps trying to bunt, but he hasn't mastered the skill. His defense is not near Walker's. He doesn't get a real good jump on the ball and tonight he went back on a ball, caught up to it, but then just plain dropped it allowing two runs to score. He has a decent arm for a center fielder.

2) Elvin Puello is not exactly a vacuum cleaner at third.

The ugly -

1) Boise's Pen - Boise has a couple of decent starters (Avery and Atkins), but after that... Santana has some speed on his fastball, but little else and got roughed up for two innings. Baez was awful. Wild up in the zone. He lasted only 1/3 of an inning. Thompson finished the game and looked pretty good, but he is old for the league. To be fair SK's line up goes .302, .339, just signed, .393, .343, .340, .303, .293, .412. Fortunately they haven't hit for much power.

Interesting note - Reynolds was at short last night. He looked good. I think he will be better suited for second in the long run though. My only question was whether he had a strong enough arm.

BeerNotes from the Chiefs/Cougars game last night

Billet was generally 90-91 with the fastball, didn't have great control of the breaking stuff. He tired in the 4th. The liner off the pitching hand sounded nasty. Garcia went to the mound to see if he was ok. They let him throw a couple and after the first one hit the screen I was saying "Take him out, his hand is numb." They let him stay in for a batter and took him out after the next guy. A couple runs scored that were charged to Billek. He seemed to be cruising along until the 4th.

Harvey is a big kid. His homer was straight away center to the right of the batters eye. More of a line shot. It sounded like he didn't get all of it but he got enough as it landed two rows up. His double was crushed to center. Watching him play, he kinda reminds me of Andrew Jones as the game appears to be easy to him. On a double into the rf corner, he had a perfect throw to second on the fly.

EPatt is the fastest guy I've ever seen. The box score says one SB, but he had two in the same inning. He's extremely quick. In the field is actions are smooth but footwork seems a little odd. He dove on a grounder to his left that he could have had standing up. He missed it and it looked like he misjudged it a little. Quick bat and he keeps his hands back on the breaking stuff well. Strikezone judgment could be improved but the ump had a varying zone all night.

Bo FLowers has a looooooooong swing. Think CPatt from the right side. He struggled against the offspeed stuff and was behind the heat when he was ahead on the count. He looks like an excellent athlete and may need to shorten his swing IMO.

Layden has a maximum effort delivery. For a relatively tall kid it was surprising to see him exert so much effort to hit 90 on the gun. His offspeed stuff had good movement, it looked like a curve but may have been the slurve.

Flud looks like a ballplayer. He took an odd route on a deep fly to center but got everything he could. He bat is quick and he has good speed. Much like Patterson, he keeps his hands back on the offspeed stuff and has plenty of bat speed to catch up to the heat. He and Patterson at the top of the order are a good combination of OBP and speed.

The Cougars had Granato's number as he was fooled all night.

Oscar bernard has a very good arm. He threw out Pennington easily on a pitch out and his throws between innings were strong and accurate. He got a workout behind the plate though. 10-15 pitches were blocked in the dirt.

Leslie (Cougar 3B) is brutal in the field. He had two errors on easy grounders and has awful footwork. He was ridden hard by the guys two rows behind me in his home park.

Lots of Cubs fans at the ballpark although no one around me had heard of NSBB. We may have a few new posters.
