If Chipper and Edmonds (if he gets a ring) have some more productive years, they'll both get in.

Here's why:

Players overrate Edmonds because of his highlights and reputation in CF. Also, by the time he retires, ESPN analysts will insist on doing what they always do and try to rank him in the baseball pantheon and as usual they will do it with little historical perspective and overrate him.

I think Chipper is a lock mainly because he is the everyday player's face of the Braves incredible dynasty. Glavine, Maddux, and Smoltz will get in, but at least one everyday player will and that will be Larry.

Those are all very good points Vance and your right it all depends on how they do the rest of their careers. Just a question do you think that having 7 gold gloves and he has a good chance of winning a few more makes up somewhat for an MVP. I know an MVP is clearly much better but if Edmonds gets 8 or 9 gold gloves that is also very impressive especially for an outfielder.

I don't think the gold gloves really make up for the MVP in the eyes of the voters, no. An MVP to the voters signifies that the player was the best player in his league for at least one season. While that may not always be true, it gives the voters a reason to say if he were the best for a time and then has good overall numbers that is why he's a HOF. Certainly not all MVP's will be HOF, but it greatly increases the chance.

This is clearly true, but does anyone know how many (or what percentage) of hall of famers were MVPs and/or gold glovers?

He's had a great career thus far, but I'd imagine he would need a couple more years before becoming a Hall of Famer. Had he given the same performance as a Yankee he would probably be a lock.

His numbers are very similar to those of Bernie Williams, and I don't think Bernie is a lock.

3-4 more seasons performing at his current level would make Chipper a strong HOF candidate.

I actually think Edmonds gets in with a few more years of healthy good baseball. Like it or not, the defense matters. No way Edmonds doesn't get in if he has 2000+ hits and 400+ HRs. He is widely considered (rightfully or not) the best defensive CF ever to play the game. The best defenders are in the Hall at nearly every position.

I think Chipper has a better resume, but Edmonds has a better chance to get in.
