If the bullpen could get hot for 8 or so weeks and Garciapparra, upon his return, is 90%, I believe the Cubs could blow the Astros away. Right now, the biggest and most important difference is pitching, the Astros are consistently pitching well, maybe a little too good - Clemens is great but, a 1.45 ERA? Come on... If the Cubs staff could come close to performing as the Astros staff has the last 6-8 weeks, it'll come down to the lineups. This is where the Cubs, with a somewhat effective Garciapparra, have, in my opinion, a huge advantage.

Lee is great, but a .360 average? Come on...

 Just playing devil's advocate.

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a wonderful Christmas.

True enough however, every season we see things fall into place over the last few months for a team or two, why in the hell can't one of those teams be the Cubs for a change?

Nothing says it can't be the Cubs -- and we were one of those teams in 2003, for what its worth. All it takes it using the proper personnel in the proper situations, and for said personnel to perform according to expected norms.

I never understood why candy and nuts made for a wonderful christmas. Maybe for some people, but for me, ugh.

I've been waiting for the if's to turn into reality for 2 years now....don't blame me for not holding my breath

Only two years? I've been waiting for the if's to turn into reality all my life.

This rendition I've been waiting 2 years for. I don't recall saying things like IF Mel Rojas can pitch way over his head and IF Brian McRae can take steroids and IF Sammy Sosa could stop striking out 200 times in a season and IF Anthony Young could win 20 games in a row instead of losing 20 and IF Amaury Telemaco can become our ace we can finish in third ;)

So you're saying we're screwed.

Blow the astros away

Slow down there Sport. The Cubs have a legit shot, but you might want to rethink your wording there.

:D

We were blowing you guys away, but then June came along

Not gonna happen. This season is over. They'll dink around and keep it close until the end of September, completely collapse in Houston on the closing weekend and whine about how much energy they expended in August and September trying to "stay close."

Of course if they played with a sense of urgency all season they wouldn't have to expend all that energy in August and September...

That's the most likely scenario; I was just trying to put a positive spin on the last two months of the season. The most frustrating aspect of the season has been watching this team underachieve, the tools are there, once again with the Cubs and Baker – coulda, woulda, shoulda…
