Nomar? He was mentioned in Jose's book, I believe. And Jose's 1-for-1 so far :( .

How do players named in Jose's book prove their innocence?

Take the test. Which all of them should have been required to under MLB's new testing policy. We should find out real soon who has and who hasn't. Since it has been reported that some forms of steroids can be detected up 18 months on the long side, and 3 months on the short side. The new policy went into effect right before the season and I believe that most have been tested by now, Raffy was tested months ago and the info was just released. I think you will see some more big names outed in the next month or so, even if they did stop using before the testing was in effect.

But the events in Jose's book happened years ago. Even if you test clean now, how do you prove you didn't take steroids back in 1998?

You would think that anyone listed in Canseco's book who actually did not take steroids would have sued him already. I mean if im a pro athlete who hasn't cheated and im accused in a book of cheating (especially by taking steroids) im suing the author of the book for slander. This leads me to believe that Canseco's book is probably pretty true.

Can public figures sue for slander?

I think that the standard for slander is "reckless disregard for the truth". Or that might be libel. I'm not sure. But one is the above, and the other you have to prove that the allegations damaged the ability of the plantiff to perform his/her job, or that it caused severe damage to their reputation.

Libel is written word and Slander is spoken. If the supposed juicers had a beef with meathead, they would sue him for Libel.

Ah, that's right. Thanks, OMC.

Yes, they can. But, the standard is higher. The public figure or official must prove actual malice, that is, with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not.

It pains me to say it, but I think my namesake might be the most likely Cub to have a positive test, IMO.

he's pretty stout. Maybe he took some roids to help his knee heal better and got caught.

Neifi? He's hit a few HR's this year....

Do they test players on the DL? I heard that it might just be too much of a coincidence that Bonds will be out the rest of the year.

I'd be surprised if Sammy got caught. He looks like he's lost weight and talent. He's probably off them by now (if he was ever on them).

As for Tigers.....Maybe da Farns?

the most commonly used muscle building steroid, nandrolone, stays in your system detectably for 18 months.

No way its Neifi. C'mon. I know you guys don't like him, but jesus HRs aren't even his style. I'd say the only reason he's hit more HRs this year is simply because he's gotten more playing time.

My guess would either be Aram or Cpatt. I hope that the entire rumor is wrong though.

Ouch. Don't say that... :pukel:

All the injuries? All the power? I certainly hope not, but he fits the category.

Do you think players named in the book have a case against Jose? (Assuming they didn't take steiroids as alleged.)

The only year he didn't show power he was hurt all year (2002).

I'll happily wear my "favorite player" blinders until I know otherwise.

What about Kerry? Constant arm issues?

This is getting to be one of those things that needs to be spelled out once and then stickied.

PEOPLE CANNOT TELL WHO IS ON STEROIDS AND WHO IS NOT JUST BY LOOKING. BECAUSE A PLAYER IS SMALL OR LARGE DOES NOT MEAN HE IS ON STEROIDS. BECAUSE A PLAYER IS OR IS NOT A POWER HITTER DOES NOT MEAN THAT HE IS OR IS NOT ON STEROIDS.

As Will Carroll often says, if we could look at players and tell who was using and who was not, we wouldn't have to spend all this money on testing.

I don't mean to speak for JC, but I think that libel is extremely difficult to prove, since the standard is so high. There's enough suspiscion out there to probably serve as a successful defense for Jose.
