If he does not bat Lawton in the leadoff hole, I will go ape-poop.

Seeing what he said about the trade, makes me believe hes thinking twice about putting somebody else in leadoff. Anyone else get that feeling?

What did he say about the trade? If Lawton isn't there, then he better be batting 2nd behind Walker.

His on-base percentage of .382 was especially appealing to the Cubs. Manager Dusty Baker said he didn't know until talking with Lawton if he would bat leadoff, but was glad to have his bat.

I'm sure Lawton is leading off Tuesday.

surely

Yes, Dusty will bat Lawton in the lead-off spot. If he doesn't, I will be eating lots of crow.

And stop calling Rocket Sauce Shirley...

Here are a few comments from Hendry on how Lawton fits in to the lineup:

“That’s up to Dusty, but I think by the nature of his performance and track record, including this year, he’s certainly a top-of-the-lineup guy, whether it’s 1 or 2,” Hendry said of Lawton.

“He’s an on-base-percentage guy, but at the same time when that lineup rolls around to his turn, he knocks in his share of runs from that 1 spot.”

And, from Baker:

“I’ve got to talk to him and talk to Walk and Hairston and just see his preference and see what we need,” Baker said.

I think we'll see Lawton/Walker 1/2 in the lineup against all RHP and Hairston hitting 7 or 8. Against LHP, Hairston will probably leadoff with Murton 7 or 8.

I think Dusty Baker is just being diplomatic. Matt Lawton is under a lot of pressure. He's expected to be the spark plug for an inconsistent offense that still has playoff aspirations. It wouldn't do Lawton any good to have Baker point that out to the media. Better to keep it low-key.

Lawton is a leadoff hitter with the highest on base percentage of all leadoff hitters in the league. To not use him the way he's meant to be used would be a crime against baseball. Personally, I'd like to see Lawton leadoff, with Walker second. We could use Hairston's speed at the bottom of the line up.

My personal preference would be:

1. Lawton

2. Walker

3. Lee

4. Ramirez

5. Burnitz

6. Barrett

7. Hairston

8. Perez

But when Nomar comes back:

1. Lawton

2. Garciaparra

3. Lee

4. Ramirez

5. Burnitz

6. Barrett

7. Walker

8. Hairston
