Of course, being the Manny-optimist I am... maybe Jim is working hard on Soriano because he's called Theo and told him "can we get Manny at a nice reduction if I can package a deal together with Soriano as the center piece?" (or maybe just Walker [and keep Soriano? :) ] seeing as how the Red Sox are looking for a good 2B.)

Maybe that's why we aren't hearing much about the Cubs yet, involved with BoSox/Manny talks, Jim needs to secure AS first. Kinda like the Nomar deal last year. Had to secure Cabrera first and then do a trade in-to-trade out deal before Theo would take the overall deal for Nomar & Matt.

That at all possible or realistic? Not sure Jim would trade for a guy of Soriano's caliber just to package him in another trade - unless Jim wants Manny THAT BADLY.

That's a much more detailed version of something I daydreamed about earlier. Of course I've probably tried everything in my power to make Manny a Cub and so far nothing has worked yet. I'm sorry if I let you guys down.

Don't despair just yet. We still got 15 hours to go. Keep the faith!

At least for another 14:30 hours anyway.

The Nomar deal wasn't announced to the public until a few hours after the deadline, right? So technically we have a few extra hours.

Nah, IIRC, it was announced about a half hour after the deadline.

I thought it was within an hour after the deadline, but your point remains. 4:00 ET isn't a hard deadline for news to come out.

I think it was just before and right at the deadline that the rumors that the Cubs were working on the deal to get him/had gotten him really started running like crazy. And it was the next hour or two when it became officially official.

Would love it if the same excitement happnened this year with Manny (even though I won't be home for it, will be working :( ).

I need to start remembering to request 7/31 off 6 months in advance like I do the Super Bowl

Dude you are a Cub fan. Go to work, aint nothing going to happen. In fact its better to work so you dont get pissed off waiting for crap to happen.

Yeah, nothing happened last year either.

Yes. That was pretty cool. But that was like a suprise party, you come home and.....holy schmoly. Dont get surpise party too much or it wouldnt be a surprise.

Remembering that day fondly, I was visiting Chicago (before I moved here) the Cubs had just lost and I was listening to 670 listening to trade updates. Nothing but Contrares for Loaiza. I turned off the radio disgusted and visited some friends. 30 minutes later I get a call from a friend in Boston: OH MY GOD CAN YOU BELIEVE IT. I was so stunned. Ahhh good memories

Seeking Soriano

Jul 30 - Jayson Stark reports the Twins are making a big push to acquire Alfonso Soriano. Rumored names heading to Texas: J.C. Romero, Kyle Lohse and Bret Boone. Although Rangers officials have been downplaying the odds of trading Soriano, an official of one interested team isn't convinced.

"I still think this talk that they're not trading him is a bunch of baloney designed to keep the price up," he said. "I still think they have to trade him, for the best pitching deal they can make. If they keep him, who's going to pitch? I know Chan Ho Park is no big loss. But who are they going to replace him with -- John Wasdin?"

The Cubs also continue to check in Soriano, according to Stark. But one baseball man who has been speaking with the Cubs says they get the impression that Texas would rather trade Soriano to either the Mets or Twins than to the Cubs.

"If they're looking for arms, they should be talking to the Cubs," he said. "If not, they should talk to someone else. But the Cubs definitely have arms."

The Cubs have told the Rangers they "would like to be in this" if Texas trades Soriano, but so far haven't gotten much respon

Why the hatred from the rangers? That team is pissing me off.

who cares about what they think of us? I'd like Soriano as a 4th option..behind Ramirez, Dunn and Kearns. Hopefully Hendry gets the memo and trys a full blown pursuit of either Ramirez, Dunn or Kearns.

The Rangers sent their top scout to watch Hill pitch today according to the dallasnews.com

•Chicago Cubs: While Lohse pitched for Minnesota on Saturday, the Rangers sent their top evaluator, director of player personnel Dom Chiti, to watch Chicago starting pitcher Rich Hill.

The Cubs also have outfield depth, which is a secondary need for Texas. The Cubs recently sent perennial prospect Corey Patterson back to the minors and have a highly coveted outfielder in Felix Pie.

It's still not certain if the Cubs would play Soriano at second and move Todd Walker to left field. Soriano has repeatedly said he does not want to move to the outfield.

Any package that includes Hill for Soriano isn't a good one, IMO - not when we already have Walker at 2B and Murton in LF. Hill's currently in OUR rotation for cripes sakes! I guess we could move either Mitre or Rusch into the 5th spot, if either are still here after all the dealing is done, but I still don't want to give up Hill for a positional player that we already have an adequate one for.

Now if Hill were required to make a trade for Manny go through....... that would take some thinking.

Poor sap. He left totally teased. He went to the prom with an eye on the prom queen. She danced her ass off and then he realized hes got no chance at stealing her after her performance.

I'd consider Hill, Walker & Rusch for Soriano, Mench & a prospect.

EDIT: Of course this means we'd have to go to a four man rotation...Okay so that deal needs some work. Instead of Rusch give em Mitre.

agreed. Hill and Pie and even more additional players for Soriano? No thanks. Like you said..Hill for Manny would be an entirely different story though.

Yep, especially one of their good SS prospects backlogged behind Young.

Yep, especially one of their SS prospects currently stuck behind Young. I'd be very disappointed in Hendry if he couldn't get the better of Hart in a trade.

Baseball Prospectus Update:

Sunday, July 31, 1:30 a.m. ET: Sources tell us that the Reds may have been very precise with their language. They may not be dealing an outfielder, but they have been talking about dealing Jason LaRue to the Padres. Sending the catcher westward apparently was first discussed during the Joe Randa negotiations, but the two couldn't be completed as one transaction. The Padres looked around and came back to the Reds for the best available catcher.

The Red Sox are making sure Plan B doesn't head west instead of north. Aubrey Huff is the current "it boy" on the whisper wire with the Sox (Red and White) checking on his availability. The Red Sox are showcasing Jon Papelbon with a start tomorrow, while the White Sox are sticking with their initial offer of Brandon McCarthy and Damaso Marte. A source that has spoken to both sides tonight says that the Devil Rays like Boston's offer better, but are not convinced they will make any move. The Red Sox also appear to know what Matt Lawton will cost.

It might be a couple weeks since "Shark Week" on cable, but two of the steely-teethed sharks in the baseball world--Walt Jocketty and John Schuerholz--are slowly closing in on deals. Multiple sources say that both teams have waited out the initial "feeding frenzy" and that their GMs will come in at the last minute with "solid deals."

Everyone's watching for roster moves that presage deals. Randy Winn was held out of the lineup before his deal and now Casey Kotchman has been noted to be out of the lineup. Also, Austin Kearns was removed for a pinch-runner. It could be something, it could be nothing.

I hear ya. I gotta leave for work at ~1:45 EST tomorrow. I hope to hear about something (preferrably something BIG) before I head off. Won't find out possibly about anything until 7-8 hours later. UGH!

Hmmmmmm... isn't LF both Huff and Lawton's natural positions?

Luckily, I have the day off so I'll be able to check for any kind of trade until the deadline.

Still though, I'll be pretty dissapointed if we don't deal for LF'er.

PHEW! I was actually starting to worry just a little that we might end up with Kearns instead of a Ramirez, Dunn, or Soriano. (yes, I would take Soriano before Kearns, even after my little rant about not giving up Hill [or Pie] for him)

Don't rub it in! and I hate you

I'm gonna be a wreck at work tomorrow. I just know I'm gonna be thinking about it all day/evening until I get somewhere to check things out (probly here at home tomorrow night).

So the Germans would have you think.

Well, seeing as how no major news isn't likely to break for at least another 7-8 hours, I'm gonna go get some sleep.

I know you're the best GM in baseball, Jim Hendry, but just for kicks... prove it to me again - get Manny Ramirez! (hate to be greedy, but if you could keep both Hill and Pie while getting both, get Alfonso Soriano too! [if you have to give up one of the 2 prospects, make sure its for Manny and not Soriano!])
