I dont get your point. There was little alternative. Instead of picking out Neifi's May stats I think its much more appropriate to point out others, on the team, that are being paid to hit for average and drive in runs. Aramis had a horrible start to the season and so did Barrett. Plus, Todd Walker's bat was also out of the lineup which compounded the problem. The bottom line is, Neifi Perez isn't paid to get the big hits. There is no reason to be angry with him. However, one could take issue with Dusty keeping him at the top of the lineup once he started to struggle.

Ronny Cedeno. And people aren't angry with Neifi Perez. They're angry with Dusty for playing him over a kid who was hitting .370 in AAA and sticking him in the 2 hole.

Exactly. Neifi saved our butts in April and May, but it has been clear for quite a while that Neifi isn't cutting it offensively, and that's an understatement. Now some people may have the warm fuzzies over his two big hits recently, but the reality is that Dusty's insitence on playing him over Cedeno has been really hurting the club. Neifi may be a better defender, but only maginally so. Certainly not enough to make up for how much better a hitter Cedeno is.

I am not mad at Neifi, he is what he is. But he along with Hollandsworth need to be on the bench, and that is Dusty's fault.

So you think AAA pitching is the same as ML pitching?

Anyone hear the start of the game?

Assuming 10?

Have they pulled the tarp yet, i'm in Des Plaines waiting for some news. It isn't raining here anymore.

Ok sorry to break up this Neifi debate, but is the rain stopped in Chicago?

It's stopped at Wrigley, yes.

Do you know if they've taken off the tarp yet?

I'm only at my apartment so I don't know. I was actually straining to hear what the PA announcer was saying but couldn't quite pick it up. My guess is that we'll start getting prepared to play (though I haven't looked at any forecast).

I really have to take issue with the people that say Neifi is the worst offensive player in recent baseball history...

Rey Ordonez, anyone?

Not so funny is the fact that both have hit at the top of our order in the last couple of years.

Dude, they're crafty, speedy, veterens, man. Dude, man, Dusty needs his speed guys at the top of the order, man.

And Nefi isn't even that fast. He doesn't steal many bases, and grounds into a ton of double plays.

I cannot be sure Ronnie would bat higher then Neifi. He is like 5 for his last 9 and still has a .262 ave. Small sample size but it all counts.

Of course we can't be sure that Ronny would do better... but why not find out?! We know what Neifi is capable of - all you gotta do is look at his career to see that - and what he's capable of isn't good enough to start everyday. It's kind of moot at this point, cause when Nomar returns the SS position will be solidified, but Ronny rotting on the bench is just stupid.

:x :?

if you can get the same production from a rookie as a veteran it is better to play the rookie because you get him some experience and prepare for the future

The Cubs weren't going to bring up Cedeno in MJay. first off, every player goes into a slump. If a manager started sitting players..

OMG The Astros win on a walk off homer by Lamb. WTF????

Neifi's not in a slump... he's just being the player that he is, which is below average. It's silly to keep starting Neifi regardless of his poor performance.

I know he isn't. I was going somewhere else with thet argument before the Asrtos rudely interrupted with a win.

What I was going to say is, Dusty was compelled to ride him out for a while because he didnt know how long he would slump. You want to ride the hot hand... Who would have expected DLee to have the year he's had. Think about the RBIs he missed out on while hitting 6th earlier in the year. Anyway, I dont have the strength to continue this debate.

Rain update: Sorry, there's still a very light sprinkle in the area. I just stepped outside and felt it, couldn't even see it from the window. Definitely not enough to stop a game, but who knows if they want to wait until it completely stops before starting one.

Edit: Oh, well I guess the tarp is off. That's what I get for looking out a window instead of at tv. :)

neifi perez couldn't hit .370 in AAA

People haven't watched many games if you think Neifi has not been special on defense this year. I love how a rookie is "know" as a great defender before he steps on the field from the minors. I don't know how many times I saw on this board how Dubois was as good as Holla on defense. Keep dreaming or please watch some games objectively. I don't care if you don't like the guy but give me a break he has been rock solid on defense, no complaints

i've watched almost every game, and neifi has been average. not terrible. not good. simply average. sorry. it's funny that people keep bringing up defense too, because that also happens to be one of cedeno's biggest strengths. also, no one on this board said that dubois was as good as holla in the field. lots of people said that hollandsworth isn't a huge upgrade over dubois defensively, but no one ever said that dubois was just as good as hollandsworth. for the record, todd is another player that shouldn't be playing everyday either.

i watch every game objectively. neifi's grand slam was nice, his hit last night was nice, but there's about 200 ABs or so that have been appalling. my exact quote when neifi hit that home run was, "YESSS! NO WAY!! NEIFI! YOU STILL ARE A HORRIBLE BASEBALL PLAYER BUT YESSS!" you make it sound like we root for him to fail. i think you need to look at him objectively. it's not like people are throwing out crazy baseball prospectus stats around to prove his worthlessness. his obp is .280 for chrissakes. TWO EIGHT ZERO

Cedeno was on the big league roster from April 21-May 17.

I stand corrected, I do remember he was brought up as a backup. There was no reason to play him in late April or early May. We need to agree to disagree we're stuck with the guy like it or not.

I disagree. We are not in the future we are in the present. Also, look at any other NL shortstop, Neifi is doing his job. BTW good news Florida just lost :D

If you can get the same production out of Cedeno as you would Neifi (and I happen to think there's a VERY good possibility that Ronny could outproduce him), why on earth wouldn't you play the younger player who may have a future on your team over a mediocre (if that) major leaguer?

Watch them bat. Cedeno has an approach, works the count, and more often than not makes solid contact. Neifi is blind hacker, and the vast majority of the balls he hits are weakly hit. He puts the ball in the air way too much for a guy with below average power, and when he does hit the ball on the ground, he lacks the speed to beat out alot of hits, and hits into alot of double plays. Cedeno is putting up roughtly same numbers as Neifi, without the benefit of consitant AB's.

When you have a guy hitting .370 at AAA and a guy hitting under .200 for two months, is there really a decision to make? AAA pitching isn't that much worse, and Cedeno has shown a far better approach at the plate than Neifi in the lamentably few AB's he's gotten on the big club.

Heh. I think the rain will stop completely in a few minutes. Looking at the radar, the back end of the storm (front) is just about to pass Chicago.

Bases drunk for the Cards in the 2nd... no one out.

Scratch that... double play! Run scores though, so the Cards are up 1-0.
