I'm guessing he was past his prime and they dumped him off at the end of his career... But what do I know? I wasn't born till 1983...

This reminds me of that commercial with Santo and Grace, circa 1995.. One of the "Cubs - We're working on it," commercials...

They talk about the good old days at the ballpark.. Hot dogs.. Ron Santo pizza in a box.. and then Ron mentions "the fireworks!" and Gracey goes.. "Aren't you thinkin of that year you were with the Sox?" and Ronny goes "Ughhhhh yea..." in his Ron Santo trademark way...

Anyone remember that?

The cubs wanted to trade him to the angels for two younger pitchers and Santo vetoed the trade. i think he was the first to use the ten and five rule.

he later consented to be traded to the sox for steve stone.

basically, the cubs organization wanted to move him.

Yup. Thus the term "Santo Clause."

I was not present back then, but I'm pissed right now Cubs wanted to trade him..

Although it was for Steve Stone, and if Cubs didnt get him, (and him never being on this team) he would probably have never done his tremendous commentating in the booth.

The Cubs decided to break up the core of the Durocher era team when it became evident that group wasn't going to win a championship (most of the key players were past their prime by then). In addition to Santo, the Cubs also traded Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, Ken Holtzman, Glenn Beckert, and Don Kessinger, among others, within a period of a couple of years.
