Scott Moore ropes a 1-2 breaking ball for a 2-RBI double to RF (Walker and Rojas scored). Daytona leads it 3-2 here in the 5th.

Now Moore steals third. And now Brian Dopirak walks. Runners at the corners and none out for DH Kevin Collins. Kevin Collins hits his 18th HR of the year on the first pitch. 6-2 Daytona.

Argh, Brian Dopirak just missed a HR by about 6" to the left of the foul pole. :x Then he strikes out. Sarasota's Justin Mallet has struck out each of the first four Daytona batters he's faced.

0-0 in the second inning.

Gallagher had a rough first. HBP, double, single, sac fly, and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt before striking out the next two batters.

Chiefs down 2-0 early.

Well predictably, the Chefs overcame that deficit and then some. They scored 6 runs in the second innings, thanks in large part to 6 walks by Joe Torres, who I've written about before in minor league discussions. Former #1 prospect of the Angels who has completely lost it. This is his stat line on the season after tonight... this literally may be the worst season I've ever seen from a professional pitcher:

1-8 (1-9 if he loses tonight), 18 G, 13 GS

43.2 IP, 61 H, 67 ER, 75 BB, 29 K... 13.81 ERA, 3.11 WHIP

I feel bad for the guy at this point. It's pretty obvious he doesn't have it any more, and considering he's pitched only 43 innings and has started 13 games, the team practically has to have a second starter ready when he pitches.

Bo, who seemingly hasn't hit for any power since the first few weeks of the season, is 2-2 with a pair of HRs and 5 RBIs.

The Diamond Jaxx are having a pretty good night, as well. Marmol with 4 innings without allowing a hit while walking 1 and striking out 8. Hoffpauir and Craig have each hit a HR and Theriot has 3 RBIs with a pair of doubles.

Marmol has a 2-hit shutout going through 7. He has walked just 1 and struck out 12.

He actually had 12 strikeouts through 6.

And that is all for Carlos. What a game.

7 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 12 strikeouts

Harvey's 2-run HR in the 6th was part of a 4-run inning for Peoria to blow the game wide open.

The I-Cubs look like they're going to be shutout. Corey is 0-2 with a flyout to right, a strikeout, and two walks.

Raul Valdez gave up 4 runs, 3 earned, in 5.1 IP on 10 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. It's appears obvious that the Cubs have given up on the idea of using him out of the bullpen this season (or at least not before September).

Jaxx win 7-0.

Sounds like Carlos is starting to adjust to the SL. :D

Harvey is now on pace for 7 HRs in 10 days.

Good to see the walks from Corey.

Well on the surface the 2 walks look nice....

Am I wrong or does it appear that Harvey is really turning it up?

He is really turning it up. He has raised his BA around 25 points in the last couple of weeks and is crushing the ball like no tomorrow.

And under the surface?

Don't really know the circumstances, maybe he was worked around (But than again Corey of a couple weeks ago could still swing at pitches that were puprosly well out of the zone...)

6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 10 K for Gallagher. Love the strikeout rate.

Tremendous. He gave up a double as the only extra-base hit, and according to the game log, two of the five singles were of the infield variety. His SLG-against is fantastic. (uh, so is the OPSvs, which I wrote first).

Nice to see the Peoria rotation rolling right now. 8)

It would be remiss not to give Bo Flowers some love for a 3-5 night with 2 HRs (one grand slam) and 5 RBI! =D>

From Bo:

CUBS TRUIMPH IN TWIN BILL OVER REDS

Daytona Took Both Ends Of The Double-Dip, And Used Rock Solid Pitching To Quiet The Sarasota Attack

By Bo Fulginiti

SARASOTA, Fla—On Monday night it was pitching that finally took precedent over precipitation, and it was the Daytona Cubs who stole the spotlight from the local radar.

Following Saturday’s rainout in Game 2 of the four game set, the Cubs and Sarasota Reds met back at Ed Smith Stadium to engage in a pair of seven-inning contests to finish the four-game series and the Cubs proved right away that they had no intentions of packing their bags quietly.

Daytona turned in a pair of stellar performances from starters J.R. Mathes (7-5) and Juan Mateo (7-4), as the Cubs completely shut down the Reds offensive attack and won both games of the double-header by finals of 6-2 in the first game and 1-0 in the finale.

Mathes got the nod in the first contest, and the southpaw went five innings and gave up just two runs on six hits while striking out six Reds en route to his seventh victory of the season. The Cubs provided plenty of offensive support for Mathes as well with a five-run fifth inning that was capped off by a three-run homerun from Kevin Collins to give Daytona the comfortable four-run cushion they would eventually win by.

Mateo then toed the rubber for the back end of the twin bill, and the righty registered his best start of the season as he went 5.2 innings and tossed a two-hit shutout while adding four strikeouts to his ledger. At one point Mateo retired 13 Reds batters in a row, and the righty showed pinpoint control by not walking a batter the entire evening.

Cubs relievers also combined to pitch 3.1 total innings of scoreless relief during both games, and closer Nate Sevier struck out the side in the final inning of the night to record his fourth save of the season.

With the two victories the Cubs won the series over Sarasota 3-1 and improved on the second half to 8-16, as the Reds dropped to 10-14.

The entire Florida State League will enjoy a day off on Tuesday, as the Cubs rest up for the first of four games against the first place Brevard County Manatees beginning on Wednesday at Space Coast Stadium.

First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EST.

Nice to see Marmol put it together at a start at W. Tenn! Anyone know how hard Marmol is throwing these days?

Harvey continues to be hot. Fuld on base 4 times yesterday. Theriot also continues to impress.

Better late than never ... from the Peoria Journal-Star:

Since O'Brien Field opened during the 2002 season, the Chiefs had 244 games at the ballpark without anyone hitting a home run over the hitting background beyond the center-field wall. ...

After going 146 at-bats between homers, Flowers added what was believed to be the longest home run in O'Brien history in the third.

"That's about as hard as you can hit it," Flowers said. "It was a nice, easy stroke and the ball had a different feel coming off the bat."

Facing right-hander Michel Simard, Flowers crushed a solo shot that center fielder Richard Giannotti never even pursued.

"It took off like an airplane, on a straight line without any hump on it at all," Granato said.

Estimated at 500 feet, Flowers' sixth homer of the season carried over the hitting background beyond the center-field wall.

The wall stands 400 feet from the plate and is 12 feet high. The black background rises 40 feet above the wall.
