maybe i'm just a cold hearted bastard, but unless his folks were just traveling in NYC and happened to have a kid while there, his butt should be playing for the USA.

This is good news for the people that want to see as few Cubs as possible take part. Arod should push Ramirez out of the starting lineup.

No if we can just find a way to make the Venezuelans not want Zambrano...

Boy will this open up a big can o' worms.

Many New Yorkers are very jingoisticly patriotic. Those people will go ballistic. Then on the other hand and side of town (N. Manhattan, Bronx) are the Dominicans, they will love him for it.

I can see many NY Yankee fans booing A-Rod. He is not that popular to begin with.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like A-Rod whining again.

Let's see, Texas wasn't a good enough team so he had to get out.

Hmm, wonder if he deems the US team "not good enough" so he'll just jump ship and play elsewhere.

This is just ARod trying to "keep it real" and playing to the large Dominican crowd in NY. He's as much Dominican as I am Irish. The guy doesn't even speak spanish without cue cards. He's a man of privilege who hasn't been accepted by any large group of fans since leaving Seattle, so he's pandering for love. He could be running for office in Washington Heights any day now.

Pudge is already playing for Puerto Rico. How about Luis Gonzalez and other hispanics who are listed as Americans?

I think they should look at your citizenship card and play you accordingly.

ps I think A-Rod just wants to be on a winning team for once.

Personally, who cares? I really don't think this world cup of baseball idea is going to be that big of a deal in the U.S. I think the other countries in the world will be all over it (because they don't have a World Series to call their own) I think there are going to be some serious labor issues with the players union and with the individual teams on letting their players compete, I just don't think this is going to play out like some think. Then you also have the Gary Sheffields of the world who, if there is nothing in it for them monetarily, will not play.

A-Rod did look at his citizenship card. It has two countries on it as he has dual citizenship, USA & DR.

ARod has turned into a wanker since donning pinstripes.

The United States doesn't recognize dual citizenship, I'm fairly sure. The DR may recognize his U.S. citizenship, but the U.S. doesn't recognize his DR citizenship.

I think you're right on here. This issue often comes up with respect to Jewish citizens granted citizenship by Israel.

My sister ran into this when going for her UK citizenship. I'm not really sure what the implications of not being recognized is. To be honest, I'm really not sure if I can think of anything other than not being able to claim to be a forein national in the U.S.

If I was from the Dominican, it would bother me to have a fraud of my team. Everyone knows A-Rod is from the US and he played highschool ball in Miami. If I was a Dominican player, I would be angry at him for finagling his way onto "my" team.

His parents are from the DR - do you know how often he travels back to DR? - can he speak spanish??

I think he would be embrace by his teammates even though he grew up in Miami.

Ridiculous. If he lived there, and ever paid anything other than lip service to his "people," it would be different.

He deserves the boos.

I just get the sense that the other players know he doesn't belong there and this will cause angst among them, especially if a player is left off the roster who is truly a Dominican in favor of A-Rod. Latin countries have a lot of pride in themselves, and manipulating a player to play for you isn't very prideful, imo. I also don't believe A-Rod has ever lived in the DR. My family is Swiss, but I wouldn't play for Switzerland in an Olympic event or Soccer per se, I would be part of the USA. Having parents from a nation does not make him eligible in my book. If he were born and raised there and came over to play baseball, my opinion would clearly not be the same.

If you were not good enough to make the U.S. team and the Swiss asked you to play, you wouldn't do it? Now in Arods scenario, this is not the case, but I could see some other fringe athletes that might not make a U.S. team but could be a superstar for another country.

Arod lives in DR from age 4 to 8 (1979-1983) and claims that where & when he learned baseball. Like I said before Arod travels often to DR and I seriously doubt DR players would have any problems with him being on the team.
