I want a pretty good shortstop so I'm going with mid to late 50's Ernie Banks.

I think the reason nobody has included Ernie is because one of the criteria was that you couldn't name HOFers.

Ah, that's right. Well my second choice, late 60's to early 70's Billy Williams doesn't work either.

How about Randy Huntley behind the plate? The dude was injury prone but when healthy, one of the best defensive catchers in the game and not too shabby with the stick.

Walton and Dernier have no body of work to provide any assurances so I don't go there. Sosa is a future HOFer. Palmerio doesn't qualify (imo) and if a future HOFer.

I gotta go with Randy Huntley and bench Barrett.

I can live with Hairston, Walker, Lee, Ramirez, Burnitz, Murton, Huntley, Cedeno. With Moreland, Hollandsworth, Perez and Barrett on my bench and Smith or Sutter in the setup role.

You would really have Dempster close over Sutter or Smith?

My starter pick is '84 Sarge to leadoff with that 400+ obp

Smith is likely headed to the hall so he really isn't an option. If the voting trend continues, Sutter might even make it. In that case, I'll try Phil Regan.

Yes, I leave Dempster in the role he has filled successfully.

Bobby Dernier

Mitch Williams

And how has noone said GA Hill?

They are still watching his last home run.

I was struggling with the bench guy between Dwight Smith and GlenAllen Hill. I went with Smith because I choice one specific season. He was better than Walton in '89.

This isn't exactly following the rules as set forth, but consider this premise... Just how good a team could you field from this roster ??

Would it have to be based on what they did while with the Cubs, or could I pick an ex-cub who had more success elsewhere? Like Dennis Eckersley?

Eck is precluded due to the HOF provision.

ok this has been fun reading..........I think I go with

P--Randy Myers (Obviously needs to be a pen guy--he is a lefty and he could work the 8th as he showed for Cincy or the 9th with us)

Pos--(i thought about Bobby Bonds to play center for us, but I didn't know if the rules where that it was talent when he was on cubs or at peak of career)--so instead I am going with Lance Johnson--I don't thinkwe need big boppers--we have enough of them.

Bench-- Miguel Cairo--anyone to get rid of Macias (I always liked him-especially the second time. I still wonder what he a Sarge Jr. must have done that night to both get released--I never understood that)

bp = mitch williams

OF--Rick Monday. 370 OBP, good power, steals some bases, strong defense, can leadoff, plays CF. Monday is Mark Kotsay 30 years ago.

Pitcher--Bruce Sutter. Best. Cubs. Reliever. Ever. Forget this sissy 1 inning and done business, Sutter will come into the game in the 7th and finish it from there. On back to back days. Add in Dempster and does it really matter if the remaining bullpen guys are any good or not? Nope.

Bench--Keith Moreland is an excellent choice. Can play six positions and is a good hitter. I'll go with Jay Johnstone or Richie Hebner as the lefty complement to Moreland.

1st,RF,LF -he could play

3rd, C- in a pinch maybe

what was the 6th position?

I should have excluded HOF candidates to eliminate obvious choices such as Dawson, Sosa, Palmeiro, Smith and Sutter.

Rick Monday was just a bit before my time. I vaguely remember him being on the team but that's about it.

Another active player I'd consider is Jose Viscaino. He'd solve the SS problem and be a better back up than Perez.

Zimmer should manage, just to mix things up Luis Gonzalez can come back to play left field, the Flash would set up, and maybe Kieschnik would be the 25th/26th man.
