I can't say that I am upset about this one. Patterson and Dubois were playing at a minor league level. I'm not sure about how much playing time the new kids on the block get, but I suppose we'll know soon enough.

I don't think this is throwing in the towel on the season. Patterson and Dubois weren't carrying this team. They were anchors.

Dusty plays everyone, Murton at least will get his fair share of ABs. Macias has the fewest ABs of anyone other than Blanco for God's sake, he is the 25th man. In ratios, Cedeno is getting about as many ABs/game as Macias. Macias is not the 10th man people.

No, but as the poster above just stated, he is ALWAYS first off the bench for pinch-hitting roles. It's as predictable as the sunrise, death and taxes.

Why do so many people on this site think Macias is the cause of our problems. No doubt he is weak, but he is the least of our problems. I would love for us to be debating over who gets the 25th spot, unfortunately, spots 6-24 are the problem.

problem is, he's not the 25th man.

Yep.

Cubs PH Hits-AB:

Jose Macias, 7-31

Todd Hollandsworth, 3-12

Jason Dubois, 3-12

Jerry Hairston, 2-12

Ben Grieve, 3-10

Jose Macias is called upon time and again by Dusty to PH, particularly in key spots (i.e. Monday Night). He fails at a dramatic rate. He is Dusty's go-to guy off the bench and the stats bear it out plain as can be. It's disgusting.

No way - your stats are faulty cuz they only like at pinch hit at bats. Holla, Doobs, Hairston - they all have more ABs cuz they get starts. Macias gets what, 7 starts a year? For the billionth time, Dusty plays everybody. Macias is the 25th man. He has to get some ABs otherwise he'll be totally worthless, which he was not last night.

Does anybody else see this thread balloon to 35 pages by 6 am?

Heh heh, good try though :D

I know, right? People weren't exactly in a froth, posting all night about this. I'm shocked this thread has so many responses actually. It's not like the Nomar trade...

I have to agree with an earlier post.. Macias is the least of our problems. I remeber last year in San Diego with his 2 triples..I think we give him too much crap. Personally I'd rather have him in a game now than Neifi.

Does anyone else on NSBB view the callups of Murton and Greenburg as showcasing to Billy Beane? Mr. Kotsay, your table may be ready...

I hope not. This season is tanked. The players are ignoring the manager; he's lost them. We need to find out whether guys like Murton, Cedeno, Greenberg and Pie can help for next year.

What numbers will the new guys be wearing? ESPN has Greenberg with 66, and Murton with 99. I'm down with them being Lemiux & Gretzky...but something tells me those won't stick.

Murton's number at WestTenn (#25) isn't taken on the 40 man, but Greenberg's #4 was being worn by Doobie. Maybe they'll go with 25 & 24.

I haven't heard. Normally those high numbers go to relief pitchers who have no business on the 25 man roster. All those Atlanta rookies had "normal" low numbers. Maybe we'll find out if either actually play tonight.

Well, it was bound to happen one way or another. It was either both of these guys going to AAA and bringing up some guys from the AAA, or making a trade to a different team.

Still, I am very very very disappointed to the Front Office about why Macias and Wilson is still on the team. If they really think that Corey is having troubles, then what in the world would you call Macias and Wilson? In my opinion, both of them are NOT Major League Baseball talent. Yet, it's pisses me off that every freaking day, there has to be a Macias PH'ing or Wilson PH'ing.

Give me 2 names on either the Iowa team, or players who are in FA that are better than those two. I'm sure it's not very hard to find some names that would contribute better than Macias and Wilson.

I was just thinking:

Considering that Lee might be out a few more games do you think we could see the following people play?

Hollandsworth (1B)

Walker (2B)

Nefi/Cedeno (SS)

Aramis (3B)

Murton (LF)

Hariston (CF)

Burnitz (RF)

Barrett ©

Not in lineup order, of course. I think this could (I hope) be what we see over the next few games.

Ah, that's what I was wondering. It's all good MembersOnlyJacket. It's early in the morning, and I'm sure you haven't had your coffee yet. ;)

Wow, this was something to wake up to.

From the Trib story:

"Patterson had to clear waivers because he has had four seasons in the majors."

He cleared waivers, or he still has to? Corey's still young and as physically talented as you need to be. I can't believe he'd go through with no team claiming him. Is this just Paul Sullivan missing something?

Corey had to pass through revocable, major-league waivers to get sent to Iowa. (Which would be true for any player with 3-5 years of MLB experience. More than that and the player can refuse the assignment and become a free agent.) He would have been exposed to irrevocable waivers only if he was out of options (he still has one left even after this year) or removed from the 40-man roster.

There was really no risk in exposing Corey to the major-league waiver process before the 31st. It's more or less an unwritten rule amongst GMs that no players are claimed from that process before the trading deadline. The original team can just take him off the wire even if that happens, anyway.

Call it wishful thinking, I guess. :D

I just heard about it today. It's a pretty big deal: who is our future CF now? We don't know anymore.

I think Corey is gone - he won't come back as a Cub and will be traded. I think we're going to trade for Kotsay and the CP experiment is over. Holla is hot now, sure, but he's no long term solution and is still best as a 4th OF.

I don't think Hendry will throw in the towel on this season - we have too much pitching talent that has been hurt and ineffective. This is not that kind of a team and we don't have that many position players to call up and start anyway. Pie, Murton, Cedeno, who at second, Richie Lewis. So that's 3 players, one or 2 of who may take over full time anyway. Pitching wise we already have a pen full of youngsters, and there's 4 starting pitchers who will never sit when healthy.

Umm...Derrek Lee?
My bad, I didn't see you correct yourself. Posted too soon.

After reading all 14 pages I've come to the following conclusions:

1. Selecting Murton and Greenburg means that Hendry is rewarding them for their good seasons but it also means that he expects the move to be temporary. Greenburg is not a blue chip prospect so promoting him sends a mesage to all the 2nd tier guys to hang in there. Murton might actually get some PT if they decide to hold Lee out until the break. That move would make sense and it would allow Murton to start while keeping Hollandsworth in the lineup

2. Baker is going nowhere. It would be nice to think so but Hendry is the guy that hired Baker. If Hendry was on the hot seat firing Baker likely wouldn't save his job so he's better off sticking with Baker and seeing what happens. We don't have to like it but there it is.

3. Patterson could be traded. Hendry seems pretty frustrated with him much like his frustration with Bobby Hill before he was traded.

4. The idea that this move will hurt Murton's trade value is silly. No team is going to assess his value based on what he does in a couple weeks in the majors. If he does well it helps a little but if he struggles it's a small sample and he still has lots of upside.

I really think that this is the last we'll see of Corey Patterson and Jason Dubois in Cubbie Blue. If this team is somehow in striking distance of the wild card come the trade deadline, those two will be gone. That bothers me. I might be one of the only people left that thinks Dubois will be a good major leaguer one day. Patterson's career so far is the result of bringing him up too soon. I hope Hendry thinks about that every time he hears someone mention Felix Pie. Learn from your mistakes Jim...

I also think that this is Hendry's way of telling Dusty his plan didn't work. He let Dusty control this ship, and Dusty sank it. Now he has probably told him that these guys are going to play. Either Dusty can play them, or Jim will find someone else who will.

I would bet we see Murton starting today.
