Without paying a ridiculous amount of his salary of course.

He's got a no trade clause. And if he waives it, I would predict he'll only waive it for a NL contending team. Furthermore, I predict that the only 3 teams I see him approving are San Diego, Atlanta and Arizona in that order.

Hendry will have to pay at least $5M of the $9M owed to him in 2006, for either the Padres, Braves or D-Backs to take him on.

I see the D-Backs having the most need for him, but they are a bubble team right now.

No, now the Trib will have to go back to the old ways of just bringing someone in that the masses will want to see. Maddux is still marketable in that regard. They won't trade him away. Or get rid of him or whatever.

I think the Cubs could pick up the remainder of his contract this year while only picking up about 3m next year and still be able to make a decent deal go down. I think San Diego is the only real destination for him. They have a huge hole in their rotation and they have a legitimate shot of winning their division. They also have money to spend, even if they say they don't.

I think so, that is assuming Greg wants to be traded (he can refuse) and not play on a sinking team.

I think the obvious choice is the Atlanta Braves. Lets be honest here, Greg's going in the hall as a Brave. He had his Chicago homecoming, we can send him off the right way, hopefully with some sort of special going away appreciation day or something, and he can finish his career where he made his mark. And they need another starter...

As for who to get back, I wouldn't say no to Kelly Johnson

Yeah, but the Braves sure as hell would.

Truffle,

Pardon my ignorance, but does this "hottest woman" have a name?

Yes, she does - my girlfriend (I wish). Actually she's Josie Maran, champion of the NSBB Offseason Hottest Chick Poll. I'm proud to say that I was the driving force in her inclusion in the poll. I guess you could say I've been behind her all the way. (again... I wish)

I don't recognize that name, but I'll assume she's a popular model or actress.

I agree. SD would be a great destination for him given their needs and their huge ballpark. Petco field will keep some of those long fly balls from going out. I just doubt the Tribune would want to eat much of his contract since we probably wouldn't get much in return anyway.

If you were a contending team, aren't there better and less expensive pitchers that you'd try and trade for than Maddux?

So far, Maddux has been another Hendry gamble that has failed.

About the only way to trade Maddux is to send him to Atlanta somehow with about $5-6M for another Andy Pratt.

So after listening to the morning and afternoon rants of the SD radio personalitites here (some of the worst and some of the best BTW) I would think Maddux has a place here. They all seem to think they can afford Zito & Redman and only have to pay pen or prospects in either deal. I would think Maddux would interest them and likewise. I asked this in a different thread but would you trade Maddux for Klesko straight up? Klesko is owed 8.25 mil in his final year next year. SD wouldn't have to spend much in this deal and have been looking to unload Klesko or Nevin for a couple of years now. Actually the money would be a was as Klesko makes 8.25 this year & next and Maddux makes 7.5 this year and 9 next (assuming). I think that I would make this deal. We deal from a position of depth (SP) and so does SD (OF). SD gets to play Nady like they have been trying all year and get the veteran starter that will lead them to the playoffs. A 3 man playoff rotation of Peavy, Eaton & Maddux ain't too bad and REALLY easy to sell to SD people. Now if we can somehow get Barfield too that would be nice.

I don't want Klesko. I'd be interested in Brian Giles as a FA. Isn't he a FA after this year? Although his power #s are way down from Pittsburgh days, his OBP is still very high, and there's a possibility his power #s will spike going from Petco to Wrigley.

i've said this many times before, giles is a FA and would be a great fit in left field next year.

They definitely won't trade him. However, he is a free agent at the end of this season. However again, I think he'll give San Diego a home town discount.

However again, San Diego lowballed David Wells after a good season last year, and he left his home town to go to Boston.

Also, the Pads are pretty much stuck with Nevin and Klesko for another season. Both have no trade clauses and exercise them every chance they get, which doesn't leave much room for Nady.

Would the Padres lowball Giles next year knowing they have Nady to take his spot if he goes elsewhere? Knowing this team as well as I do, I wouldn't be surprised.

San Diego might be able to get the Cubs to pay some of his 2005 and 2006 salary (assuming he reaches the innings plateau). San Diego is where Maddux's off-season home is, if I'm not mistaken, and maybe he would wave his no-trade clause to go there and help them reach the playoffs. He has become a 2nd half pitcher in his later years, and in Petco Park he'd put up some great numbers.

I think it's more likely we trade Maddux for young prospects. SD makes a lot of sense, but if I were to look at the AL, Baltimore needs pitching badly.

Not that badly...Maddux in the AL (DH, etc.) in a small ballpark.
