Dunn deal?

As of Monday afternoon, Astros owner Drayton McLane said general manager Tim Purpura had not asked him to approve a trade for Cincinnati slugger Adam Dunn, a New Caney High graduate.

According to a report, the Astros have been working on a deal to acquire Dunn for prospects Ezequiel Astacio, Taylor Buchholz and Fernando Nieve.

"He hasn't brought anything to me," McLane said of Purpura. "That's why you're catching me totally off guard. I don't know of anything like that, but we would have to look at what we'd have to give up.

"You look at each of the last six years, we've given up two to four players every year. So it catches up to you."

Purpura later told the Chronicle the rumored trade was a "media fabrication."

If this turns out to be true, I'm going to injure myself. If Hendry doesn't get involved and become a player for someone like Dunn, and then the team behind us who bumped us off last year does it again I'll be done with this team. It won't be worth watching the rest of the year because the conclusion will be all too obvious.

I'm also a bit tired of Hendry waiting, but I can see Cincinatti wanting to trade Dunn south rather than here. Houston's window is juuust about shut, so they figure Dunn realy can't hurt them long term the way he could in Chicago.

What I'm steamed about is the lost opportunities in the past 2 offseasons, the poor bench construction, and the fact that if we make a trade, it might come 2 weeks too late.

If the Astros acquire Dunn I don't see how their window is shutting. If anything it is opening.

They have:

Berkman, Taveras, Ensberg, Backe, Oswalt, Pettitte (a little past his prime), Everett, Lane, Lidge, and Duckworth. If Dunn is added that is a pretty decent nucleus on which to build.

I'm not certain Hendry is waiting. IMO, it is likely other trading partners who are waiting, trying to get the best deal. Why rush a bad deal?

I would hate to see Dunn go to the Astros ala Beltran and take them to the playoffs this year. Espcially when Hendry has better prospects to offer and a deeper system.

I guess maybe I am impatient. However, this is my beef with the Cubs and Hendry. Supposedly we have all this super duper talent in the minors. Then by God start trading a few of them for some decent players to replace our mediocre ones such as Patterson. Sorry for the rant but it does get old IMO. It's not like this team is all that far away from really doing something in the postseason. Just add a few more pieces. It's not like this is a surprise to anyone.

Amen to that Idea. Stop waiting and do something. There's no excuse for Dunn to end up with the Birds or the Stros while Hendry patiently waits. Offer em anyone besides Pie and get the deal done. If it takes Pinto, Guzman, Hill and Dope, then do it. We can't let a 25 year old with as much potential as Dunn slip away. I'm of the opinion that since Rich Hill isn't gonna get to pitch in the majors, then we need to deal him before his stock drops completely like Sosa, Farnsworth, and soon to be Patterson.

I am starting to think that Hendry doesn't have a plan for the future. Everyone gets excited about the Farm system and the Cubs supposed talent down there, but what is the point of having good minor league players if they are going to rot on the farm. It is clear that Hendry is not going to give any of these guys a shot to actually win a spot on the team. I say Hendry because he is the one that signs fringe veterans. Case in point, this year the Cubs had 2 young OF in Iowa (Kelton, Dubois), instead of giving them the job and getting acclamated to the majors, he signs T. Hollandsworth and tells him he has a shot to win the job. Knowing Dusty's history of playing rookies that is as good as handing him the job over the rookies. He should be smart enough to realize that Dusty is not going to play the young guys unless that is his only option.

Just don't understand why Hendry is so reluctant to trade any of the young players if he is not going to give them a chance to play?

That deal is garbage. You'd think Dunn would actually acquire useful talent, but either this rumor is completely bunk or Dan O'Brien is going insane.

I'm not buying this rumor.

I think Jim has a better idea of which prospects are going to plan out than others. I think he saw the writing on the wall with prospects who we all thought would make for, at minimum, solid players (i.e. Hill, Beltran, Harris, etc.)

Maybe he's building up the prospects so that other clubs think they're really getting a steal when/if he eventually trades them. There's no reason to talk down or neglect your farm system if you believe at the least you have people other organizations would like to have.

And specifically to your point about having rookies play, I think that has more to do with Dusty than Jim. I really believe that the Hollandsworth signing was based on Jim's premise that Dubois would get the majority of the playing time based on Hollandworth's everyday playing ability. Unfortunately for all of us, Jim underestimated Dusty's "veteran" fetish.
