Bumpity bumpity bump

His ERA in July was just barely over 3 coming into today and he has a bad inning so you bump the thread?

And now his July ERA is over 4. You can find all the obscure stats you want, but the painful fact of the matter is that he's no longer a good pitcher.

The only painful thing is having to read you chime in with a negative post whenever he struggles. Notice you didn't bumpity bumpity bump after he put up 8 innings of 2 run ball in his previous start.

Don't read the thread then... or ignore me. I started this thread over 2 months ago on the premise that Maddux would be only an average pitcher next year, and that paying an average pitcher $9M would be a major waste of money for a team that doesn't have unlimited resources. Even though he has had a few good games, his stats still completely support that idea. But I guess since we're Cub fans we're supposed to accept mediocrity.

Maddux wont retire.

Thanks for the input... I assume you are his accountant, gardener or close personal friend to be able to make such a judgment?

I really wish Maddux would retire, but everything I've read seems to indicate a desire to keep playing, good performance or not.

eatting some crow.

I've been one that didn't think Maddux's contract was something that would hurt the club. I've changed my mind.

There are three NL teams on the west coast, all of whom play in gigantic ballparks, all of whom are desperate for pitching. nobody would claim Maddux if a post-deadline trade was arranged.

Hendry needs to sit down with Boras and say "it's quite simple Scott. waive the no trade clause and pack off to Cali. either that, or Maddux and his 4.65ish ERA rides the pine as soon as he reaches 390 innings, the option doesn't vest, and Gregs looking for a contract at 40 following two crap years."

As much as I would be interested in that happening, Boras says: "That's a good one Jim. I think you'll reconsider if you ever want to sign any of my clients, or any clients in general, after I tell the media about your shenanigans."

One of which happens to be Carlos Zambrano.

"I'm sorry to hear that Scott. we've always had a good working relationship. you know the Cubs are willing to pay if they think your client is the best player for the team. I've done alot to help you up the contracts of your players. just this past year, neither Beltran, Drew, or Ordonez would have gotten their contracts if their respective teams didn't think they were bidding against us.

but nonetheless, I'm calling your bluff Scott. because you know as well as I that all you are interested in is money, and if the Cubs offer the sweetest deal, you're going to advise your client to sign the contract, regardless of some grudge you may have over the Maddux situation. you see the fact is Scott, you need the Cubs more than the Cubs need you.

as for the media, say what you want Scott. all we have to do is say we are putting Mitre or Rusch on the mound because he gives us the best chance to win. with Maddux's performance, it's a pretty valid point. and if its not taken with validity by the media, I think I've proven that I truly can't give a damn what the media says. I'm building a baseball team here, not running for office."

I certainly think that if we fall out of it over the next month, we should trade Greg to one of the teams still in it who need a pitcher badly.

But, with the way Greg is pitching of late, I don't think we'd have to say we're moving him to the pen because of the vesting option. We'd say we're moving him to the pen because he's been inadequate as a starter.

This is the same organization that refused to let Choi get a better taste of the majors because Fred McGriff (to whom the org. owed very little) was pursuing some idiotic record.

There is no way, not a chance in heck that the Cubs will do that to one of their all-time greatest players. Especially a guy who is, by nearly every account, a very good individual and great team player.

That idiotic record was 30HR-100RBI w/ 5 teams. And We got Lee in return for Choi. I'm just botherd by the headline in the Tribune after the trade: "Choi Will be Great, but Lee Already is"
