Personally fine with that. Cash in on him having one of the best years of his career. Only if we are putting that money towards a Soto type player or a guy we trade for and try to extend though. It makes no sense to trade him and put that same money towards another Taillon in FA this offseason. You would have to feel good moving forward about a rotation of Steele, Imanaga, Brown, Wicks, Assad, Wesneski, Horton, etc.

It gets you far enough under that you could conceivably go get a Vlad type player in a trade and not go over the tax also. I’m not sure if they are willing to make those kinds of moves though with an eye on not just this year, but the future.

I don't think replacing him in the offseason on a similar deal is that difficult.  The issue is getting something back that makes the risk worth it. If it's a 40 FV guy then I'd rather just keep him.

Unless we eat some money, I doubt we are getting much of anything better than a lottery pick back. Although Jed has proven to be pretty good and finding those diamonds in the rough in these type of deals.

Seems like there aren't many great available starting pitchers this deadline. He's having a great season and isn't a rental. I'm not expecting back an elite prospect but feels like we should get something certainly worthwhile and then we can add another starter in the offseason. Is the Jordan Montgomery trade last year a good outline? A couple of borderline top 100 guys?

Even if they ate the remaining money left for '24, a 50FV guy is probably too optimistic and, even if you got one, they'd likely be several years away.  a 45 guy or a 40+ with some helium seems reasonable if you're looking for someone close to MLB ready.
