I think it's mostly a path of least resistance sort of move.  If you look at the pitchers on the 40 man there isn't really another option if they want a fresh arm.  Rucker can't be brought back up for a few days, Estrada just went to Arizona for injury/dev list purposes, Brown is on the IL, and Thompson and Jensen are disasters.  Kilian can backstop long relief for a couple days until Assad/Wesneski are able to resume that role(since they don't need the #5 SP until Stroman returns), and Rucker can take over that roster spot after if not Stroman himself.

Playing against this Braves team has the feel of being a significant underdog in an NCAA Tournament game.  You know the other team is better, bigger, more athletic, etc, but the upset is possible if you can win the turnover battle and shoot the lights out from three.

It's really hard to imagine being able to beat the Braves in a 5 or 7 game series though.

Cubs patience and ability to work counts has been tremendously impressive this year. Too bad the advantage of getting a starter out early isn’t as great as it once was.
