Good

  • Adds a year under contract to a good player
  • Starts next year so doesn't touch this year's LT payroll when they're very close to it now
  • Doesn't commit to super long term where a player with Nico's attributes/injury history has more downside
  • Proof of concept that they can extend pre-FA players

Bad

  • Only buys out one year when they could've done 2-3 without a ton of downside
  • Lines up Nico, Seiya, and Taillon to all hit FA the same year

Like this a lot.  My biggest issue is like TT said this puts him and Seiya into FA the same offseason.  A fourth year would have been ideal but I'm much happier with three than I would have been with 5.

I really think the bolded above says a lot about their expectations of the farm. I don't think they intend to sign any of the existing position players past '26. I think they expect 1B and two outfield positions to come from the farm by the end of the year, and for Happ to find his way back to the infield or out the door if both Davis and PCA are contributing in September.

From Hoerner's perspective, the shortness is all about his belief in himself as a SS.

Yeah I almost didn't include that bit because it's not like the team would turn down an extra year of Hoerner just because he aligns with some other FA, and to your point they back themselves to not have the cliff they saw with the last core.  I think it underscores the benefit they would have gotten by trying to get another year or two if they could though, there's very little difference in the downsides if that deal is 4/55 or 4/60.  Maybe Nico did insist as insurance that he can get paid as a SS, but that logic is at least a little odd considering he'd have 3 years of mostly playing 2B unless Swanson gets hurt, so there'd be open questions about him still being that caliber SS.
